FLAG DAY AND ARMY B-DAY

It’s not only Flag Day, but it’s the birthday of the United States Army.  Flag Day was adopted in 1777, while the American Continental Army was formed in 1775.  Wisconsin has one of the primary Army training bases in the country at Fort McCoy in Monroe, established in 1909.  About 100-thousand-troops go through training at the Fort every year.

TAX CUTS HIGHLIGHTED IN WI BUDGET PROPOSAL

The budget from Wisconsin lawmakers includes nearly four-billion-dollars in new spending, and now 450-million-dollars in tax cuts.  Republicans on the state’s Joint Finance Committee yesterday ended their budget work session by approving the tax cut proposal.  If Governor Evers agrees, the tax cuts would save people in Wisconsin, on average, 211 dollars over the next two years.  Republican state Senator Alberta Darling says the tax cuts show that Republicans can craft a state budget without a tax increase.  The two-year spending plan now

PRISON TIME FOR BARRON CTY. MAN

A Barron County man is going to prison for five years after pleading no contest to trying to have sex with a 15-year-old girl.  Police say an officer recently posted an ad posing as the girl and Lee Stokes responded with sexual messages and photos.  Stokes was later arrested at an arranged meeting place.  He was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday followed by five years of supervised release.

SHIRT LEADS TO SUSPECT

A Clark County burglary suspect is in custody after a sweater belonging to him was left at the scene.  A criminal complaint claims the owners of a greenhouse in Warren recently reported money was stolen.  Police found a sweatshirt at the scene that they matched to a mug shot of Vernon Sensenig and arrested him.  Police say they also found cash and drugs in Sensenig’s house.  He’s being held on 50-thousand dollars bond.

OWEN PARK FLUSHING OUT DETAILS FOR NEW BATHROOMS

A new bathroom and pavilion could be coming to Owen Park in Eau Claire.  The Plan Commission will hold a meeting Monday on whether or not to recommend the project to the city council, which could discuss it on June 24th.  The Eau Claire Community Services director says the new bathroom is needed because the current one floods in the spring.

EC COURTHOUSE SEES SECURITY UPGRADES

There will be added security at the Eau Claire County Courthouse starting next month.  Reports say on July 1st the second floor will have one entrance from the stairs and elevators, new security screening areas, and added security personnel.  Courthouse officials say the reason for the change is to increase safety.

ONE TO PRISON, ONE TO TRIAL

One half of the Dunn County couple charged with child pornography and sexual assault is agreeing to go to prison.  Wayne Englin pleaded guilty yesterday to three charges, he was originally facing 30 different counts.  His wife, Michelle, is headed for trial.  The judge in the case said there’s enough evidence against her for prosecutors to proceed.  She’s due back in court next month. *PHOTO CREDIT: WEAU 13 NEWS

ALL ABOARD! LOCAL AMTRAK GETS PUSH

There’s a new push to get more Amtrak service in western Wisconsin.  The West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition is talking about bringing four trains-per-day to the line between Eau Claire and Minneapolis-St. Paul.  The coalition’s Scott Rogers says it will take a public-private partnership, which means taxpayers will likely have to foot some of the bill.  Rogers says the coalition thinks there’s enough interest in train travel to fill the trains.

MARSHFIELD SCHOOLS LOSE TO SCAM

Marshfield schools are out over 650-thousand-dollars after getting scammed.  The school district yesterday admitted that someone gave banking information to a caller who posed as a vendor.  That then lead to the scammers taking 660-thousand-dollars late last month.  Marshfield Superintendent Ryan Christianson says they are working with the FBI to try and get the money back or find the scammers.  He says the case should be a warning for everyone about privacy and security.

CHECK-IN ADDS UP

Hotel rooms in La Crosse will cost more as the city looks for a way to pay for work at its convention center.  La Crosse’s city council last night approved a point-and-a-half increase to the city’s hotel-motel tax.  Visitors will now pay nine-and-a-half-percent tax each night.  City leaders hope the tax will raise the two-and-a-half-million dollars they need to pay for 42 million-dollars in renovations at the La Crosse Center.
