Police and EMS are responding to a significant crash on Highway 178 / Seymour Cray Sr. Blvd at the Olson Dr intersection. They are planning to be on site and detouring traffic for quite some time, so a heads up that you will want to avoid this area. WEATHER ADVISORY UNTIL NOON

A winter weather advisory is in effect in Eau Claire until noon today.  According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will move through the area and switch over to snow around ten o’clock this morning.  One to three inches of snow is expected to fall in Eau Claire during the day and another one to three inches is expected tonight.  There’s a chance for lighter snow Thursday and Friday.

MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING DISABLED WOMAN

A central Wisconsin man is accused of killing a disabled woman.  Police say they found 20-year-old Samantha Roberts dead of head trauma at a home in Nekoosa in Wood County on January 17th.  Police say Paul Carter had been living with the victim and is now charged with her death.  He’s being held on one-million dollars bond.

GOING GREEN COULD SAVE GREEN

A new study claims switching to electric vehicles could save Eau Claire a lot of money.  Xcel Energy recently studied communities in three states and found electric vehicles save about 55 cents per gallon on gas.  Eau Claire leaders say the city could save over 100-thousand dollars over ten years by switching five city vehicles to electric.

WI LEADS IN ORGANIC FARMS

Wisconsin has the second-most organic farms of any state in the country.  That’s according to a recent study by the U.S. Census of Agriculture.  It says there are about 12-hundred organic farms in the Badger State, less than half as many as number one California.  The study says organic farms make up about two percent of all farms in the state.

The next time an elected official steals from taxpayers in Wisconsin they could pay with their pension. Governor Tony Evers yesterday signed a new state law that will allow a judge to seize the pension of any public official convicted of a felony theft or misconduct. The law is inspired by the case of former Eau Claire County treasurer Larry Lokken. He and his assistant stole more than one-million-dollars from taxpayers. MAN HELD ON $250K CASH BOND AFTER KILLING FATHER

Prosecutors in Dunn County say the suspect in last week’s beating death outside of Colfax told police that he exploded after years of abuse. The D.A. yesterday said that 51-year-old Gary Styer admitted to beating his father to death with a two-by-four last week. Styer told investigators that his father abused him going back to his childhood, and he finally exploded. Styer is being held in the Dunn County Jail on 250-thousand-dollars cash bond.

REPEAT OFFENDER HELD IN POLK CO. JAIL

A man convicted of sexual assault of a child back in 2011 is looking at new sex crime charges. Prosecutors in Polk County yesterday charged David Granger Jr. with rape. A woman says she woke-up on Saturday with Granger on top of her, and he refused to stop. Granger is being held on sexual assault and bail jumping charges in the Polk County Jail.

EC CO. BOARD VOTES “YAY” NOT “NEIGH” ON HORSE DRAWN BUGGY REGISTRATION

Eau Claire County will likely be one of the counties to slap a new registration fee on horse drawn buggies if state lawmakers agree. The county board last night voted nearly unanimously to send a letter to the State Assembly urging lawmakers to approve a county-based horse and buggy registration law. The idea is to help local law enforcement track down horse and buggy owners if there is an accident or reckless driving.

LACROSSE LAWMAKER INTRODUCES VAPING LEGISLATION

A western Wisconsin lawmaker is one of the first to introduce a new plan to get tougher on vaping. La Crosse State Senator Jennifer Shilling yesterday introduced a proposed law to make sure young people under 21 don’t buy or use vapes. Schilling’s plan would also ask for a new state ad blitz to talk to young people about the dangers of vaping. That’s the same idea that Governor Tony Evers presented last weekend.
