FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF STAFF TO HONOR PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEE KILLED

Flags at state buildings in Wisconsin must fly at half-staff today due to an order from Governor Tony Evers related to the death of a public works employee in Milwaukee.  The governor says the half-staff order is for all day Saturday.  Bryan Rodriguez was hit and killed by a vehicle while on-duty last week.

WARNING-UTILITY SCAM TARGETS WI

Utility scammers have a new approach to rip-off people.   Wisconsin Public Service says there’s been an uptick in a scam in recent days where utility customers in the Green Bay, Marinette and Sheboygan areas are receiving calls saying utility crews need to exchange or remove gas or electric meters.  Sometimes the customer is told a reimbursable payment is needed and sometimes scammers threaten to cut off service if no payment is made.

GAS PRICES CLIMB UP

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Wisconsin is up four-cents from a week ago.  Triple-A says the price statewide today is two-dollars-and-21-cents, while the national average is two-29.  The lowest prices are posted in the Janesville at two-17 a gallon.  Drivers in Superior are paying the most at the pump at two-24 for regular gas.

WHITEHALL MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON

A Whitehall man is going to prison for 14 years after being convicted of child sexual assault.  Sixty-seven-year-old Daniel Stafford was accused of sexually assaulting a girl between five and ten-years-old over a five year span.  You may have read the details of this case in The Leader Telegram, saying Stafford was visibly emotional and apologized at his sentencing.  After his prison sentence he’ll serve four years of probation.

EC FIRE LEAVES FAMILIES HOMELESS

Residents of a duplex in Eau Claire are displaced after a fire.  The Eau Claire Fire Department says the building on Second Avenue caught on fire early yesterday morning and firefighters found it filled with smoke.  Crews quickly doused the flames and ventilated the house.  The Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced families while the building is unlivable.

FLU CASES HEAT UP IN WI

Flu cases are starting to increase in Wisconsin after a slow start to the season.  The La Crosse County Health Department says it’s noticing an increase in cases even though flu season hasn’t been very disruptive so far.  People are taking better precautions to deal with the flu this year though.  The Health Department says about 52-thousand people in the county have gotten their flu shots this year compared to 50-thousand last year.

POSTAL SERVICE DELIVERING MESSAGE: CLEAR OFF MAILBOXES

The postal service in Eau Claire is asking residents to make sure they have their mailboxes clear of snow.  Post office officials say there have been multiple postal workers who have gotten hurt this winter because of snow and ice covered sidewalks and walkways.  The Eau Claire postmaster says it’s important to have at least six feet cleared in front of and behind mailboxes.  Meanwhile, what about that towing order? WI NOT LIKELY TO LEAVE OBAMACARE LAWSUIT

It doesn’t look like Wisconsin will be leaving the Obamacare lawsuit after all.  Attorney General Josh Kaul yesterday said that he doesn’t see the state changing sides on the case that challenges the federal health care law.  Kaul and fellow Democrat Tony Evers campaigned on a pledge to remove the state from the lawsuit, but Republican lawmakers passed some laws back in December that would make that difficult.
