MAKING SENSE OF WI CENSUS

Governor Tony Evers wants Wisconsin to take full advantage of next year’s census. The governor yesterday ordered the creation of another task force, this time to focus on counting everyone in the state. The governor’s new Complete Count Committee will lead the effort to count everyone in Wisconsin, whether they are in this country legally or not. Evers says hundreds of billions of dollars are on the line in the 2020 Census, and he doesn’t want to miss-out.

GARAGE TOTAL LOSS AFTER FIRE

It was just before noon on Monday morning when the Black River Falls Fire Department and the Hatfield Fire Department were paged by the Jackson County Emergency Dispatch Center for unattached garage fire at N9193 Wren Lane. Upon arrival the departments had heavy smoke coming from the building and visible flame inside the 40′ x 40′ single story wood frame structure.  The fire cause is under investigation but a chimney pipe thimble through an exterior wall is suspicious in natural.

OH, BABY! WI COULD SEE NATURAL POPULATION DECLINE

The Wisconsin Counties Association says the state could see a natural population decline within the next 15 years.  According to the association’s division Forward Analytics, the fertility rate for Wisconsin women has fallen to the lowest since 2002, meaning the death rate could soon surpass the birth rate in the state.  Forward Analytics says the birth rate could be reversed if Millennials are simply waiting until their 30’s to have children.  If not, this would be the first natural population decline in a generation.

DNR TALKS CWD

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is trying to talk to people at CWD. The latest Marquette Law School Poll shows almost half of people in Wisconsin believe that the disease is about the same as it was last year. Some voters say it’s getting better. DNR says its numbers show that CWD is spreading in the state. DNR says last year, 11-hundred deer tested positive for CWD, compared to 181 a decade ago.

KEEPS GOING…AND GOING….

They could soon be hiring in Portage. Energizer last week announced plans to move its production from a plant in Vermont to the old Rayovac facility in Portage. Energizer bought the plant last year. About 225 people currently work at the facility in Portage, and there’s no word on how many new jobs will be added when the work from Energizer arrives.

MISSING ELDERLY WOMAN FOUND

The search for a missing elderly woman in southwestern Wisconsin is over. Deputies in Richland County found 79-year-old Gail Stone’s body at the bottom of a ravine yesterday morning. She’s been missing since Tuesday. The sheriff in Richland County doesn’t think Stone’s death is suspicious.
