MAN ARRESTED AFTER DOMESTIC DISPUTE

Just before 10 on Saturday night, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from a female advising that she was walking on Hwy 53 by Rice Lake after a domestic with her husband, Steve Anderson. HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN VERNON CO.

Police in Vernon County are investigating a homicide.  The county sheriff’s office says it responded to a home in rural Chaseburg on Saturday when a man reported suspicious activity.  Police say they found a dead man outside the home who was identified as 75-year-old Stuart Warner from Arizona.  The caller, David Stowe, was later arrested after police determined a gun was used in the incident.  He’s charged with first-degree intentional homicide.

ROLLOVER CRASH KILLS ONE

A person is dead after a rollover crash in Black River Falls.  Police say a car crossed the median on Highway 54 near Andrews Road over the weekend and continued off the road until it rolled over.  One person in the car was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.  Police say they believe alcohol, speed, and a lack of seatbelt use were all factors in the crash.

NEW NONPROFIT EVICTED

A newly opened nonprofit in Colfax is being evicted after its landlord says it violated its lease agreement.  There have been multiple issues in the past few months, and the Dunn County court commissioner ordered the OCD Foundation to leave its building on University Avenue over the weekend because of claims it made alterations to the building that weren’t allowed, didn’t pay utilities, and allowed people to live in the building.  Multiple employees also claim they weren’t paid their agreed

WI STUDENTS HEAD TO C-O-M-P-E-T-E

A fifth grader from Eagle School in Fitchburg and a sixth grader from North Middle School in Menomonee Falls will be competing in the national spelling bee this year.  Maya Jadhav and Immanuel Goveas finished first and second in the Badger State Spelling Bee over the weekend, securing their spots in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.  This will be the second straight year the pair will compete in the national bee.

EMMY AWARD WINNER “BOOKS” A GIG IN EAU CLAIRE

An Eau Claire native Emmy award winner and author is making an appearance in town this week.  You may have seen this if you were paging through the Leader-Telegram. Steve Betchkal will be at Dotters Books on Hogeboom Avenue on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.  At the appearance Betchkal is expected to read a short excerpt from his book Walk the Walk, Camp the Camp, Bird the Bird and do a signing.

HIGGINS FACING MILLION DOLLAR BOND

The father of a missing toddler found dead in Minnesota is facing a million dollar bond.  Dariaz Higgins is accused of murder in the shooting and killing of the girl’s mother.  Higgins faces intentional homicide, resisting an officer, and use of a dangerous weapon charges.  He has not been charged in the death of two-year-old Noelani Robinson.

ELIZABETH SMART VISITS BARRON COMMUNITY

Elizabeth Smart is helping the Barron community move forward after the kidnapping and return of Jayme Closs.  A fellow kidnapping survivor and child safety advocate spoke to the community Friday night at Barron High School, sharing her experience on the day marking five months since Closs originally went missing.  Smart was abducted from her Salt Lake City home in 2002 when she was 14, and was missing for nine months.

BETO MEETS BUCKY

Madison is one of several stops 2020 presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke has made on a trip through the Midwest.  The former Texas congressman drew a crowd yesterday morning at Cargo Coffee East, where he spoke about his plans to take on President Trump.  He also discussed the detention of immigrant children at the US-Mexico border. BARNES IN EAU CLAIRE

Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes is headed back to Madison after a visit to Eau Claire.  Barnes joined several small business owners at Red’s Mercantile to hear about what it means to be a female small business owner.  The group also discussed the impact of the Red Letter Grant, which provides female entrepreneurs across Western Wisconsin with start-up capital and networking opportunities.
