UW PRESIDENT PUSHES FOR CAMPUS MAKEOVER

The head of the University of Wisconsin is trying to convince lawmakers to start a building boom on campus.  UW System President Ray Cross yesterday told reporters that the university needs better buildings to attract top professors.  Cross says more than half of the buildings at UW Madison are over 40-years-old.  Governor Evers proposed a billion-dollar building program for the UW System, but Republican lawmakers have balked at that price tag.

POLITICAL MAPS LEAD TO COURT

The top Republican in Wisconsin’s State Assembly doesn’t have to answer questions about the state’s political map just yet.  A three-judge panel in Chicago yesterday said it won’t decide if Assembly Speaker Robin Vos must testify in a legal challenge to the Wisconsin map until the Supreme Court decides two other cases involving political maps from two other states.  Those rulings are expected later this month.  The case dealing with Wisconsin’s political map is due in court in July.

It is National Cheese Day, which is widely celebrated in our state.  Travel Wisconsin says the Badger State is home to about 100 cheese factories.  Ninety-percent of the state’s milk is made into cheese and the state produces about two-point-eight-billion pounds of cheese a year.

FAMILY OFFERING REWARD IN CASE OF MAN FOUND DEAD

The family of a Gilmanton man who died back in November is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.  Toby Cleasby was last seen leaving his house on November 5th and his dead body was found in an Eau Claire home about a month later.  Police say Cleasby’s death doesn’t seem suspicious but his family thinks he may have been murdered.  The family is offering ten-thousand dollars for any information that leads to an arrest

SUV FIRE DELAYS TRAFFIC

No one is hurt after an SUV caught fire in Clear Creek.  The Eau Claire Sheriff’s Office says the fire started yesterday afternoon near the intersection of County Highway D and Williams Road and that it caused a brief traffic delay.  The driver was able to get out without being injured but they were ticketed for not having a valid driver’s license.

FIRE ON THE WATER

A boat is destroyed after a fire in Northwoods.  Pine Lake Fire and Rescue says three people were on the boat when it caught fire on Lake George near Rhinelander yesterday but they were able to get safely to the dock.  The boat had to be taken out of the water after the fire was extinguished so that no debris got into the water.  It’s unclear how the fire started.

RASTAFARIAN CHURCH HEADING FROM PEW TO THE BENCH

The founder of a Rastafarian church in Madison accused of being a front for drug dealing says the claims are a lie.  Police raided the church last week and search warrant documents claim marijuana had been sold at the church for several months.  Court records also say an undercover informant bought drugs from the church.  The church founder says church members can’t purchase cannabis under any circumstance.  He and another church official have a court hearing scheduled for Thursday.

This one is sure to get some love on the internet.  Appleton’s minor league baseball team is changing its name from the Timber Rattlers to the Udder Tuggers, at least for one night.  The idea is to celebrate Dairy Month on June 20th.  There are special cow themed jerseys for sale.  You can find them all at the Timber Rattler’s website.

SCHOOL BOARD GOES BACK TO THE RE-DRAWING BOARD

Eau Claire schools will be keeping their enrollment map, at least for a little while longer.  The city’s school board last night voted to do some more work on a planned boundary shift.  Superintendent Mary Ann Hardebeck says some people in the district are fighting the change.  The school board wants to know how students will be impacted if they are sent to new schools to ‘balance’ enrollment in the district.
