MAN ACCUSED OF CHILD SEX CRIMES

A man is being charged with child sex crimes in Barron County after an undercover investigation.  Reports claim 35-year-old Joshua Studer sought to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex but that girl was actually an undercover police officer.  Studer was arrested and charged with using a computer to facilitate a sex crime, attempted sexual assault of a child, and child enticement. LA CROSSE AREA FACING FLOOD THREAT THIS WEEK

The La Crosse area could see flooding later this week.  According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River should rise with the rising temperatures and cause minor flooding in the region Thursday and into Friday.  The river level could then increase steadily as more snow melts north of the region.

REMINDER TO GET ID AHEAD OF VOTING DAY

If you’ve moved since the last election or are new to the state, time is running out to get a new ID.  The Wisconsin Department of Transportation yesterday said people who need a new state-issued ID in order to vote should get one as soon as possible.  Voters will head to the polls April 2nd.

UW SCIENTISTS MAKE CANCER RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH

Two scientists at the University of Wisconsin say they’ve made a breakthrough in figuring out how a normal cell stops protecting against cancer.  UW scientists Richard Anderson and Vincent Cryns this week said a lipid messenger in cells is key to whether a cell will protect against cancer or allow the disease to run rampant.  They say their research opens-up a new field of study in cancer research, and hopefully brings doctors a step closer to finding a cure.

STATEWIDE STATE OF EMERGENCY

A statewide response to flooding is continuing.  Officials say at least 200 people have had to evacuate their homes.  Emergency crews passed out 150-thousand sandbags across the state since flooding began last week.  Governor Evers issued a state of emergency Friday in Madison, as well as at least 18 municipalities.  No injuries have been reported.

GORDY’S TO BECOME FAMILY FARE SUPERMARKETS

SpartanNash is planning to rename Gordy’s Market stores as Family Fare Supermarkets.  The new logo you will see will look like this: The company was the winning bidder on five Gordy’s Market stores on March 6th.  Officials with the company says the stores will be converted to Family Fare Supermarkets in the near future.  The company is taking over stores in Chippewa Falls, Lake Wissota, Barron, Cornell, and Chetek.

EAU CLAIRE MAN REACHES PLEA DEAL FOR BATTERY & ANIMAL ABUSE CHARGES

An Eau Claire man is facing probation after reaching a plea deal on battery and animal abuse charges.  Branden Hadt was sentenced to one year of probation yesterday.  Police say he beat his roommate last August over late rent.  Officers who responded found a dog that appeared extremely underweight and covered in feces.  Hadt pleaded no contest to the charges of disorderly conduct and mistreatment of animals in exchange for the dismissal of the battery charge.

The Eau Claire School Board is considering a proposal to match donations of over a million dollars for upgrades to Memorial High School’s athletic facilities.  The board heard the plan yesterday, which could include setting aside capital funds or possibly issuing some debt to cover the funds. The board will vote on the plan at its April 1st meeting.

HOLA! MUY BUENA, CLASE

Eau Claire will soon have a program to teach children in both English and Spanish throughout elementary school.  The Eau Claire Area School District approved the Spanish Dual Immersion Program yesterday.  The program will teach students in both languages in a traditional classroom setting.  The board chose Longfellow Elementary back in December as the site for the pilot program.

BOLTON REFUGE HOUSE TALKS EXPANSION

Bolton Refuge House is planning to construct an apartment complex to better serve its mission.  The organization wants to build a two-story, six-unit complex connected to the current location on South Farwell Street.  Bolton Refuge currently has an 18-room emergency shelter which operates at capacity the majority of the time.
