EVERS “UDDERLY” DISAPPOINTED IN PERDUE COMMENTS

Governor Tony Evers says he resents comments this week by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue that family farms must grow to survive.  Perdue made his comments Tuesday at the World Dairy Expo.  Evers says smaller farms should be supported and not be told they have to get bigger if they’re going to survive.

LOCAL CARE CENTER CLOSING DOORS

An Eau Claire nursing facility is closing.  Clearwater Care Center on Heights Drive says they’ve experienced years of financial losses.  The longtime nursing home had 161 beds available.  They will be moving their residents to other facilities before closing their doors.

EAU CLAIRE MAN FACING SEX CRIME CHARGES

An Eau Claire man is facing charges in Marathon County for allegedly trying to meet two 15-year-olds for sex.  Thirty-six-year-old Marshall King was actually talking to undercover officers when he thought he was talking to teens online.  King is already a convicted sex offender and was arrested while meeting his probation officer in Eau Claire County.  He is in jail there awaiting formal charges.

BEAN COUNTERS ADD UP TICKETS

The Menomonie Police Department is giving people a new way to pay off their parking tickets.  The third year of the Food For Fines program allows anyone to bring in a non-perishable food item to get up to two-dollars off their fine.  If multiple items are donated, it could add up and pay off the entire ticket.  The program starts November 1st and runs until the end of 2019.

WI WANTS YOU!

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is encouraging local high schoolers to stay in state for college.  UW System leaders visited UWL yesterday as part of their All in Wisconsin tour.  They emphasized the Health Science Academy at the La Crosse campus, which offers a two-year program to help high school seniors get a higher education in health science.  UW System leaders say they want to replicate that program at other campuses statewide.

DASSEY ASKS FOR CLEMENCY

Attorneys for one of the convicted killers of a freelance photographer 14 years ago is asking Governor Tony Evers to grant clemency.  Brendan Dassey attorneys Laura Nirider and Steven Drizin talked with reporters in Madison today about the clemency request.  Dassey has been in jail for 13 years and is not eligible for parole until 2048.  He was convicted at 16-years-old along with his uncle Steven Avery of killing Teresa Halbach in 2005.

FIRE SAFETY FRONT BURNER ISSUE

Firefighters across Wisconsin are urging people to create an escape plan in case of fire.  National Fire Prevention Week begins Sunday and officials say having an escape plan and practicing it is key to surviving a fire.  It’s estimated that people have as little as two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds.  The National Fire Prevention Association says on average 53 people die each year in house fires in Wisconsin.

MEETING FOR TORNADO VICTIMS

A meeting will present resources to Town of Wheaton residents who were affected by last week’s EF-3 tornado.  The resource meeting will take place at the Chippewa County Courthouse on October 8th from 3 until 6 p.m.  Anyone who has questions can meet with multiple agencies that will be in attendance.  They’ll have answers about how to replace records, building permits, and about state and federal programs that can help. BLOOMER MAN ACCUSED OF FL MURDER

A Bloomer man is accused of murdering a married couple in Florida.  A criminal complaint says Alex Zwiefelhofer and another man murdered the couple near a church after meeting for a gun sale in 2018.  The complaint claims the men killed the couple so they could pay for travel costs out of the country.  Zwiefelhofer was arrested in connection with the case back in May, but the details are just now being released.  Zwiefelhofer is the son of Bloomer police

HWY CLOSED AFTER MILK SPILL

A milk truck crash is being blamed for causing a lengthy closure on County Highway O in Cadott.  Police say The truck tipped over and spilled milk on the highway near 240th Street around 3:30 yesterday afternoon.  The highway was closed for about four hour after the crash.  It’s unclear what caused the truck to tip over.
