CORNELL MAN DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT

On October 17th at 5:45 am the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Dept. received a 911 call in regard to a traffic accident on 273rd Street just south of the Holcombe High School.  The caller indicated that a vehicle struck a power pole and was overturned in the east ditch. RAIN LEADS TO TRAIL CLOSURES

Recent heavy rain in the upper Chippewa River watershed is causing increased levels on the Chippewa River in Eau Claire. At 4 a.m. the Chippewa River gauge at Grand Avenue read just over 763 feet, which is about 9 feet below the flood stage reading of 773 feet. WI SEES UPTICK IN TICK-BORNE ILLNESS

Wisconsin is one of the worst states in the country for tick-borne illnesses.  According to Consumer Affairs, the Badger State has the 6th-most illnesses from ticks.  The Eau Claire County Health Department says ticks also still cause a risk even though temperatures are dropping.

SUICIDE RATES DROP IN WI

The suicide rate in Wisconsin is declining.  According to the Department of Health, 887 people in Wisconsin died from suicide in 2018, down from 918 in 2017.  However, the department says the suicide rate has been on an upward trend and increased by 40 percent between 2000 and 2017.  The number in 2017 was a record high.

Habitat for Humanity is currently working on a home for a family in Mondovi and that connects many people in our community, including a local radio station. Today’s Variety I-94 recently provided more than just the soundtrack for pounding nails. STAYING ON TASK

Wisconsin is getting another task force. Governor Tony Evers yesterday ordered the creation of a Climate Change Task Force to look at how the state can be more green. The governor has created at least a half-dozen task forces, councils, or committees since he took office back in January. Evers is giving this task force an August deadline to come-up with recommendations.

UW STUDENT NUMBERS DROP

There are fewer students on campus at UW Eau Claire this fall. The University of Wisconsin System released this fall’s enrollment numbers yesterday. UW Eau Claire lost 346 students compared to last year. UW La Crosse added just 10 students. The numbers are not unique. Only five of the UW System’s 13 campuses saw enrollment increase this year. La Crosse parks managers say they don’t tolerate hate, but they can’t have anti-hate signs up in the parks and say no to others. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department yesterday said it removed the Hate Has No Home Here signs from its parks because other people were putting other signs right next to them. FEWER PEOPLE WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate continues to tick higher. The latest report from the state’s jobs agency shows that the jobless rate in Wisconsin hit three-point-percent last month. That’s the fourth straight month that the unemployment rate increased under Governor Evers. One of the reasons is the drop in manufacturing jobs. Manufacturing lost 68-hundred jobs between September of 2018 and September of 2019.
