NO NEW TRIAL

A man convicted of killing three people in Dunn County won’t get a new trial.  Reports say Serghei   Kundilovski  withdrew his guilty pleas in court yesterday, but a judge ruled he couldn’t have a new trial.  Kundilovski argued he didn’t understand the consequences of his plea because he’s fluent in Russian and only speaks broken English.  He pleaded guilty in November of 2017 to killing three people in a near head-on crash in July of 2017.

MKE TO HOST SATELLITE IOWA CAUCUS SITE

Marquette University in Milwaukee is hosting a satellite location for the 2020 Iowa Caucuses.  This means Iowa residents who aren’t in the state next Monday can vote at Marquette.  It’s one of over 100 satellite Iowa caucus sites being held around the country.

J.J. WATT BOBBLEHEAD TURNING HEADS

Ride ‘um Bucky! A new bobblehead of former Wisconsin star J.J. Watt is revealed.  The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee this morning released a bobblehead of Watt wearing his Wisconsin jersey while riding on the back of a badger.  Watt will also host Saturday Night Live for the first time this Saturday.

UWEC PREPS FOR INCOMING STUDENTS

UW Eau Claire has, or will have, students from China. The school yesterday said it is taking steps to make sure those students don’t have the coronavirus. UWEC sent a letter to students yesterday explaining the precautions that the school is taking. The university says there are 165 current or incoming students from China, they will all be screened for the virus. The spring semester starts at UWEC on Monday.

LOCAL TRAILS STRUGGLE WITH WARMER TEMPS

It’s been a slow winter for people who like to snowmobile in the Chippewa Valley. Trail organizers yesterday said some area trails are closing again because of warm weather. Trails in Chippewa, Dunn and Barron counties will be open this weekend, but trails in Eau Claire County will not.

ALTOONA LOOKS TO ADD K9

Police in Altoona are looking to get another K9 officer. The police department lost its police dog Max when his handler resigned last month. Police Chief Kelly Bakken says they hope to hire another K9 officer and get another dog. There is no word when that could happen, or how the city will pay for the new duo.

NEW ADDITION MAKES SUMMER SPLASH

The fountain at Eau Claire’s Wilson Park looks to be on its way out. The city is looking to replace the fountain with a splash pad. The fountain has been out of action since it suffered a ‘catastrophic pipe failure’ last year. Eau Claire says the splash pad will cost about 150 thousand-dollars. The plan is to start work on the new pad this summer.

SCHOOL FUNDING REPORT SUGGESTS DROP

A new report says Wisconsin schools will get less money next year than they did in 2011. The left-leaning Wisconsin Budget Project yesterday said that inflation-adjusted state aid to schools is down about one percent from a decade ago. The group says that doesn’t include the billions of dollars that local taxpayers have agreed to spend on schools, or the money that Wisconsin is spending for school choice programs. WOOD CO. CHEESE OWNER CHARGED WITH THEFT

The owner of a Wood County cheese company is charged with stealing from more than 80 dairy farmers.   Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced today that Michael Moran, owner of Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese Company is charged with felony theft.  He’s accused of forging the names of farmers on underpayment checks and converting the funds for his own use.  The attorney general says the dairy producers suffered over 21-thousand-dollars in losses.

WI RESIDENTS URGED TO PARTICIPATE IN 2020 CENSUS

State and local leaders are urging Wisconsin residents to participate and be counted in the 2020 Census.  Forms will be available April 1st by mail and online and Census workers will also be canvassing neighborhoods.  The information collected determines the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives as well as how much funding will be allocated for community projects.  Each Wisconsin resident generates nearly 16-hundred-dollars in federal funding for critical services in the state.
