SPECIAL GUN CONTROL SESSION SET FOR NOV.

Governor Tony Evers is calling for a special session for the Wisconsin Legislature to take up gun control bills.  The session is set for November 7th, but already leaders of the Republican dominated State House and Senate say they won’t take up the proposals.  Nothing requires the legislature to move on the governor’s request.  Republicans see it as an attack on the Second Amendment while the governor says the vast majority of Wisconsinites show support for universal background checks and red flag laws.

LITTLE TAX DIP FOR EC PROPERTY OWNERS

Property owners in the Eau Claire school district should have lower taxes next year.  Schools announced last Friday they’re projecting the first balanced budget in the last nine years.  They say this will cause the tax levee to drop slightly.  They say the owner of a 150-thousand dollar home will pay about 36 dollars less in property taxes.

POLICE UNCOVER BOMB LEFT BY WAUSAU KILLER

The death toll in northern Wisconsin from the man accused of shooting three people at a Wausau cemetery could have been much worse. Police say Henry West tried to start a fire at his apartment in Schofield, and left a bomb at the house next door. They also say West set a fire in that home with an open gas line. Investigators say that could have killed 100 people had the gas line exploded. West is facing homicide charges for the shooting

If President Trump is looking for a new place to host the G7, why not Milwaukee? Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett sent the president a letter yesterday inviting him to hold the economic summit here next year. The president is looking for a new site after pulling the meeting from one of his resorts. Barrett said Milwaukee is a great city and tells a great story.  He says Milwaukee is on America’s ‘Fresh Coast’, the Great Lakes.

DEADLY WEEKEND FIRE IN EAU CLAIRE

Investigators in Eau Claire are looking for the cause of a weekend house fire that left one person dead. The home in the 600-block of Congress Street burned early Saturday morning. The person who died was found inside the home.  Eau Claire police have not yet identified the victim.

WESTSIDE DUPLEX FIRE

A home in Eau Claire has about 75-thousand dollars worth of damage after a late night fire.  The police department says the fire likely started in the kitchen of a home on Normandale Drive late last night and moved into the attic.  Everyone was already out of the house when firefighters arrived and no one was hurt.

MAN JUMPS INTO LEGAL TROUBLE

The man who jumped from a TV tower in Menomonie is looking at felony charges. Prosecutors in Dunn County filed charges on Friday against Mason Barth. He got stuck in the guide-wires of the tower. The D.A. in Menomonie filed charges for trespassing.

It could be the last challenge to the Republican reform laws of last December.  Wisconsin’s Supreme Court is set to hear arguments today from the unions who are challenging the law that requires the state’s attorney general to get permission before settling or withdrawing from a lawsuit. Wisconsin’s dairymen are once again warning about what could happen with a new layer of bureaucracy for local communities. The Wisconsin Dairy Alliance late last week wrote an open letter to lawmakers that highlights their worries about changes to Wisconsin’s siting laws.
