LACROSSE OFFICER SHOT, CREDITS VEST FOR SAVING LIFE

La Crosse police are crediting an officer’s bulletproof vest with saving his life.  The officer was shot in the chest Saturday afternoon while responding to a domestic violence call.  Police commanders say the officer’s vest stopped the bullet.  The officer was taken to the hospital and later released.   Other officers shot and wounded the suspect in the case, and he’s still being treated at a local hospital.  Police say the suspect has a history of arrests.

COST TO POWER UP MAY GO DOWN

There’s some good news for Xcel customers in western Wisconsin.  The company says your power bill may go down a bit this year.  Xcel agreed to a new rate plan last week that will freeze electricity costs for the next two years.  Regulators in Madison say some tax credits and investment savings will help Xcel keep rates where they are.  Xcel says the average power bill in western Wisconsin should drop five-percent compared to last year.

STORMS STRIKE AGAIN

There’s more storm damage to clean-up in northern Wisconsin.  This time it’s folks in Peshtigo, in Marinette County.  Forecasters say a strong line of storms cut through the area Saturday night.  The storm knocked down trees and knocked out the power.  There is plenty of damage, but neighbors say there are no reports of any injuries.

Folks in southwestern Wisconsin are being told to think twice about drinking well water.  A new report from the U.S. Agricultural Research Service shows 91-percent of the private wells they tested are contaminated with fecal matter.  Researchers say the results should be alarming.  They say there are serious questions about the safety of drinking water in the southwestern part of the state.

HAMMOND MAN PICKS UP 5TH OFFENSE

A 38-year-old Hammond man was arrested for a 5th offense over the weekend. It was on Sunday, August 4th at 1:57 am, a WI State Patrol Trooper attempted to stop a vehicle traveling eastbound on I94 at Mile Post 1 for operating without required headlamps. The vehicle struck a guardrail and then continued eastbound on I94 at approximately 55 mph as the Trooper followed in pursuit. MERGER TO JOIN LACROSSE CLINICS

Planned Parenthood and Essential Health Clinic are joining forces.  The merger brings the total number of Planned Parenthood sites around the state to 24, three of which will perform abortions.  The new venture announced Friday becomes official August 19th.

DEADLY ACCIDENT IN FLAMBEAU

An accident in Flambeau leaves one dead. Price County Sheriff Brian Schmidt reported Friday that his Department received a 9-1-1 call at 6:20 p.m. reporting a single vehicle rollover crash on State Highway 70 near North Fork Road in the Township of Flambeau. Preliminary investigation revealed a pickup truck with two occupants was traveling eastbound on State Highway 70 when it went out of control on a curve, went off the roadway, and rolled. VAPING UNDER FIRE FOR HEALTH RISKS

The number of Wisconsin young people hospitalized because of vaping continues to increase.  The Wisconsin Department of Health Services today says it’s received reports of eleven new cases of teens and young adults with severe lung damage.  The department is already investigating seven other cases.  Chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, a cough and even weight loss are some of the symptoms.

WEEKEND FILL UP’S DOWN A BIT

The average cost for a gallon of regular gas in Wisconsin is down a-penny-a-gallon compared to a week ago.  Triple-A says the average price statewide is two-dollars-and-71-cents today, just below the national average.  Drivers in Eau Claire are paying the highest average price at the pump at two-78-a-gallon.  The lowest average price is posted in Fond du Lac at two-59-a-gallon for regular, followed by Madison at two-63.
