DUNN CO. DRUG ARREST LEADS TO FEDERAL PRISON

A man arrested in Dunn County on drug charges was sentenced. 46 year old Fred McGee, of Chicago was sentenced this month to 84 months in federal prison for possessing 100 grams or more of heroin with intent to distribute. McGee pleaded guilty to this charge in August. UPDATED CWD INFORMATION

In cooperation with local businesses, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff will collect deer heads for chronic wasting disease surveillance testing during the 2019 archery, crossbow and gun hunting seasons. Chronic Wasting Disease has recently been detected in a wild deer from Eau Claire County. The CWD-positive deer was a mature buck harvested in October. CALLING ALL WINTER LOVERS

Ski bums are getting ready to hit the slopes in the Badger State.  Cascade Mountain near Portage is opening early, adding more powder to its hills and expecting skiers and snowboarders this weekend.  Last year Cascade Mountain opened a week later.  Ten runs and two lifts will be running.  Tyrol Basin in the town of Vermont is already open with its tubing complex set to open next month.

LOCAL SCHOOL PRESIDENT TO RETIRE

The president of Regis Catholic Schools in Eau Claire is retiring.  The school recently announced Mark Gobler will be stepping down on June 30th, 2020.  RCS says Gobler made the announcement early so they would have time to find a replacement.  He’s been president since 2013.

CHIPPEWA CHECKS ON BAD CHECKS

An Eau Claire-area man already accused of writing bad checks is charged with writing more bad checks.  Ryan Sturz was charged with multiple felonies in Chippewa County this week after being accused of stealing nearly 140-thousand dollars worth of items from area businesses.  Sturz was previously charged in Eau Claire County with writing bad checks to purchase more than 87-thousand dollars in items from Eau Claire stores.

KITTENS FOUND AFTER TREE FALLS

Over half a dozen kittens are found living in a dead tree in Eau Claire County.  Reports say a 200-year-old oak tree was cut down this week and seven cats were found inside after it fell.  Workers say they’re only a few weeks old.  They’ve since been turned over to the Humane Association.C

Prosecutors in Dunn County are looking at the case against a woman from Boyceville who police say starved her dog. Boyceville Police arrested Anne Iehl on Monday. ASSEMBLY OBJECTS TO OWI CHANGES

Drunk drivers in Wisconsin could be catching another break. Democrats in the state Assembly yesterday objected to a plan that would add mandatory minimum sentences for people who kill someone in an OWI wreck, and for people convicted of their fifth or sixth drunk driving case. The Wisconsin Senate approved the idea without problems last week.
