WI LAWMAKERS LOOK TO TAX CUTS FOR FARMERS

The latest plan to help farmers and dairymen at the Wisconsin Capitol includes two tax cuts. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos yesterday said one tax plan would allow farmers, and some other small businessmen in the state, to deduct the cost of health insurance from their taxes. The other idea is a straight-up property tax cut for farmers. Vos said he hopes to have both plans to the floor of the Assembly for a vote before the end of the month.

WI U.S. SENATORS VOTE AS EXPECTED

Wisconsin’s two U.S. senators voted exactly how you’d expect on impeachment involving the charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin yesterday voted to remove President Trump from office, while Republican Senator Ron Johnson voted to acquit the president. The vote in the U.S. Senate was almost exclusively down party line. Only Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney voted to impeach President Trump on one count.

SWEET ADDITION TO PLEASANT PRAIRIE

Southeast Wisconsin is about to be a gummy bear hub. HARIBO, the world’s largest gummy bear maker, yesterday announced plans to open a facility in Pleasant Prairie. The new plant will sit on almost 140 acres, and managers say there will be ‘hundreds’ of new jobs. It is HARIBO’s first ever North American plant. The hope is to break ground later this year.

It was pen to paper today at our Capitol. Governor Tony Evers signs 16 bills at the state capitol including one dealing with dyslexia and related conditions.  The bill requires an advisory committee be formed to develop a guidebook with the screening process, intervention and instructional strategies for those students dealing with dyslexia.  The guidebook is expected to include a description of the screening process and tools to identify dyslexia and a description of resources and services related to dyslexia.

The Henry Vilas Zoo has two new additions.  Zoo officials say two female African penguin chicks were born three days apart last month.  The penguins will grow off-exhibit during which time they will learn to swim and get big enough to make their public debut in the spring.  The public will be asked to help name one of the penguin chicks later this month.

BARRON MAN FACING MORE CHARGES

A Barron man is facing child sexual assault charges.  A criminal complaint says Edwin Gutierrez admitted to assaulting someone in a church parking lot in Almena last November and December.  Gutierrez is charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child.  He’s also facing charges in a hit and run case from September.

AMISH SHED TOTAL LOSS AFTER FIRE

A shed at an Amish farm in Eau Claire County is destroyed from a fire. Reports say the fire broke out around two o’clock Tuesday afternoon in Bridge Creek.  Reports say the fire may have been caused by a chimney malfunction and the shed’s considered a total loss.

It could soon be more expensive for students from Illinois and Minnesota to go to college in Wisconsin. UW Trustees are set to vote tomorrow on a plan to raise tuition for non-Wisconsin students at the campuses in Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Platteville, River Falls, Stevens Point, and Whitewater starting this fall.
