SHOOTING RULED JUSTIFIED

An Eau Claire County sheriff’s deputy and an Augusta police officer have been ruled justified in killing a man.  According to a recent report from the Eau Claire County district attorney, Officer Levi Stumo shot and killed Tyler Meier during a confrontation between Augusta and Fairchild back in March.  The report says Meier attacked Stumo and Deputy Daniel Eaton multiple times, causing Stumo to shoot him.  Stumo said he feared for his life and thought Meier was trying to take

THE RUMORS ARE TRUE…

Hy-Vee is planning to tear down the old K-mart building in Eau Claire to make way for its planned store.  Reports say the City Plan Commission will meet next Monday to discuss Hy-Vee’s proposal.  If approved, a new store will likely be built at the old K-mart location off of Clairemont on around ten acres of land.  Demolition is currently scheduled to happen next spring.

WI BILL ADDRESSES BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR GUN SALES

Governor Tony Evers has a new bill that would require universal background checks for most gun sales in Wisconsin.  The bill comes in response to the two recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.  The bill was recently introduced by Democratic lawmakers and Republican leaders are mostly dismissing it.  It would require nearly all gun sales to go through a federally licensed dealer except for a few exceptions involving transfers by gift or by inheritance and certain service

DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER CRACKS OPEN TODAY

A campaign to stop drunk drivers starts in Wisconsin today.  It’s the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign and more law enforcement will be on the roads than usual across the state.  There will be about five-thousand patrolling officers on the roads as well as over 300 drug recognition experts.  The campaign runs through Labor Day.

EAU CLAIRE GEARS UP FOR BIKES

The City of Eau Claire is asking for help making the city more bike-friendly.   The city has submitted an application to the League of American Bicyclists to achieve a silver-designation and it wants feedback from residents on how the city could be better.  Residents can fill out the biking survey on the city’s website through September 22nd, just click here to learn more.

FORMER DEPUTY WILL GO BEHIND BARS

A former Minnesota deputy will spend the better part of the next decade behind bars for trying to have sex with a 15-year-old girl.  A judge in Barron County yesterday sentenced Jeffrey Masek to eight years in prison.  Barron County authorities arrested Masek last spring after he tried to set-up a meeting with a teenage girl.  He was really texting undercover officers.

PRELIMINARY HEARING SET FOR MISSING WI BROTHERS

A preliminary hearing for a Missouri man suspected in the disappearance of two Wisconsin brothers is set for next month.  The court set the hearing today to determine whether there is enough evidence to try Garland Nelson on tampering charges.  He allegedly drove a truck rented by Nick and Justin Diemel from his Missouri farm to a parking lot where he left it.  The brothers have not been heard from since visiting Nelson on a cattle business trip last month.

WI ADDRESSES BACKGROUND CHECKS

Governor Tony Evers and other Democratic leaders are proposing a bill to close the state’s background check loophole.  The governor said today it’s time to stop ignoring the problem of gun violence and for elected officials to find the courage to do what is right.  The proposed bill would expand background checks for handgun purchases with exceptions like sales to a firearms dealer, military member or police officer.  Republican leaders say the Legislature will probably not take up the measure,

WI UNEMPLOYMENT INCHES UP

The Wisconsin unemployment rate inches up slightly.  The State Department of Workforce Development says today the jobless rate last month was three-percent, which is up a tenth of a point from June.  April and May saw record lows of two-point-eight-percent.  Despite the slight increase, the state’s unemployment rate is below the national average of three-point-seven-percent.
