MUDSLIDE CAUSES BOX CAR SLIDE

Authorities in Grant County are blaming a mudslide for a train derailment that sent a couple of box cars into the Mississippi River.  It happened yesterday morning near Glen Haven.  No one was hurt in the derailment.  A Burlington North Santa Fe spokeswoman says nine cars were knocked off the tracks, they are all reported to be empty.

LACROSSE ON NAUGHTY LIST?

There won’t be any public Christmas decorations in La Crosse this year.  Mayor Tim Kabat last night told the city’s council that the city doesn’t have enough workers to both pick-up leaves and hang Christmas lights.  Kabat says he’s got to be the Grinch and prioritize leaf pick-up.  Downtown Mainstreet usually partners with the city to hang the decorations, they say they may look for another partner this year.

REPEAT OFFENDER COULD BE IN PRISON FOR LIFE

Prosecutors say the man accused of gunning down Officer John Hetland may never be free again.  A judge yesterday set Dalquavis Ward’s bond at five-million-dollars.  Kenosha County DA Michael Graveley said Ward could spend the rest of his life in prison.  Ward is accused of killing Hetland during an armed robbery last month.  Ward had been out of federal prison for four days at the time of the crime.

EVERS PUTS PEN TO PAPER FOR YOUTH CORRECTIONS

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections will have some more time before closing two youth facilities.   Governor Tony Evers said today he signed a bill on Friday that keeps the troubled Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake facilities open until July 2021.  They had been scheduled to close in January 2021.  The governor says more time is needed to get replacement facilities prepared and to be sure the process for transferring between facilities is clear.

MAN ENTERS NOT GUILTY IN DECADES OLD MURDER

A man charged with two 1976 murders is pleading not guilty.  Eighty-two-year-old Raymand Vannieuwenhoven [[ van-U-when-hoven ]] entered his plea in court today. He is accused of killing David Schuldes and Ellen Mathys at McClintock Park 43 years ago.  DNA from the crime scene matched a particular family and after testing last year authorities were led to the suspect.

WI CHEERS “FORE” NATIVES

Two Wisconsin natives are making fans proud in the Badger State.  Steve Stricker became the 40th U.S. Senior Open champion with a win yesterday over fellow Wisconsinite Jerry Kelly.  The good friends walked to the 18th green at the Notre Dame course in South Bend, Indiana as fans cheered the twosome, who posted low numbers.  Stricker finished 19 under par, tying the largest margin of victory in the tournament’s history and winning by six over Kelly and David Toms.

POLICE STILL LOOKING FOR PASSENGER IN DOWNTOWN INCIDENT

A person is in custody following reports of someone pointing a gun out the window of a vehicle in Eau Claire.  Police say the incident happened along Third Street Saturday night and they were able to locate the vehicle along Water Street around 10:00 p.m.  An airsoft pistol was recovered from the scene.  The person taken into custody could be charged with disorderly conduct and possession of THC.  A passenger in the vehicle is still wanted by police.

BARN HIT BY LIGHTENING

Lightning is believed to be the cause behind a barn fire in the Township of Eaton.  If you were watching WEAU-TV news this morning, then you likely saw the footage and saw that the barn is a total loss.  The fire started around 11:00 yesterday morning and crews were on the scene for several hours battling the blaze.  The cattle were able to get out of the barn safely.  It was the second lightning-related fire call of the day, as

WORKING THROUGH DNA KIT BACKLOG

A new report says there are a lot fewer DNA kits waiting on shelves at the state crime lab.  The Wisconsin Department of Justice says the number of DNA kits waiting more than 90 days to be tested went from 766 in January to 410 in April.  Back in 2015, there were six-thousand untested kits.  Former Attorney General Brad Schimel eliminated that backlog by last year.

OSSEO MAN HEADED TO PRISON FOR ABUSING SON

An Osseo man is heading to prison for abusing his infant son.  A Trempealeau County judge sentenced Mitchel Feyen to five years in prison for child abuse.  Feyen pleaded no-contest back in April to hitting the little boy so hard that he gave the baby a brain hemorrhage.
