It is oh-so cold again in west-central Wisconsin.  The National Weather service says it got as cold as negative 15 degrees in Eau Claire this morning with wind chills around 30.  The high today will be around 14 degrees. SNOWMOBILE SAFETY REVS UP

We’re in the middle of the deadliest month of the year for snowmobile accidents.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says a dozen people have died in snowmobile accidents so far this winter season.  The DNR says about six people die every February and about 16 people die every winter season.

COLFAX MAN HEADED TO TRIAL

A Colfax man will be tried on first-degree murder charges.  Gary Styer appeared in Dunn County Court Thursday where a judge ruled there’s enough evidence in the case to send him to trial.  Styer’s accused of beating his father to death with a two-by-four at their home last month.  Police say Styer admitted to killing his father because he abused him as a child.

GOAL HIT!

A senior center is celebrating after reaching its fundraising goal of $1.1 million toward a new senior fitness center addition. The L.E. Phillips Senior Center raised the money through a campaign that started in the fall of 2019. The L.E. Phillips Senior Center launched the campaign in October 2019 to design and build the 14,000 sq. ft. addition. The new addition will be attached to the existing center and will provide for a huge new space for an upgraded fitness

UWEC INVESTIGATING CLAIMS OF DISCRIMINATION

The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire is looking into a complaint that one of the school’s vice chancellors discriminated against one of his co-workers because she is a woman. Angela Swenson-Holzinger is accusing Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management Albert Colom of talking down to her and criticizing her simply because she is a woman. Her complaint says Colom never criticized the men she worked with. Colom isn’t responding to the claims, but the school says it is looking into the matter.

RIB LAKE MAN LOOKING AT 11TH OWI

A Rib Lake man with 10 OWI convictions is looking at another drunk driving charge. Deputies in Taylor County say 66-year-old Michael Krug told them he’d been drinking all afternoon last Saturday. Deputies found him after he crashed his car in a ditch off of Highway M. Investigators say Krug’s blood-alcohol content was twice the legal limit at the time of the wreck.

THE WHEELS NOT MOVING FORWARD

No one knows when crews will start work on Eau Claire’s new bus transfer station, but they know it won’t be this spring. Eau Claire Transit Manager Tom Wagener said work was supposed to start this spring, but that has been delayed because of a number of permitting and reporting issues that deal with the housing part of the transfer hub. Wagener says once those are resolved, the 23-million-dollar project can roll forward.

CAPITOL TAKES ON EPI-PENS

The latest plan at the Wisconsin Capitol would manage prices for epi-pens in the state. Democratic state Rep. Robyn Vining is pushing legislation that would allow pharmacists to substitute generic epinephrine pens for patients. She says that could help neutralize cost swings for name brand epi-pens. Vining’s proposal would also have the state buy epi-pens for every ambulance in the state. She says right now, some ambulances don’t carry the drug because it is too expensive.

NEW GRAIN EXPORT HUBS PLANTS HOPE FOR FARMERS

Farmers in Wisconsin hope a new grain export hub at the Port of Milwaukee will help their bottom lines. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett yesterday said the 31 million-dollar project is the largest single investment at the port since it opened its modern facilities 60 years ago.
