PETITION URGES BODY CAMERAS FOR ECPD

There is once again a conversation about getting body cameras for Eau Claire police officers. A petition is making the rounds that urges the city to get officers the cameras as soon as possible. Eau Claire is planning to equip officers with body cams in either 2022 or 2023. The petition wants that moved-up to no later than 2021. Eau Claire is looking to spend 800 thousand-dollars on police body cameras.

TROOPS ENDING MISSION

Wisconsin troops will no longer be in the streets of Madison and Milwaukee. Governor Tony Evers yesterday ended the guard’s mission to help local police departments deal with the protests that rocked both cities for about two weeks. The governor thanked the troops, and said he is encouraged that the last few nights off protests have seen very little violence. Nearly 15 hundred troops were mobilized across the state over the past two weeks.

PUSH FOR NEW UW PRESIDENT

Thousands of students and faculty members at the University of Wisconsin want the school to start over in its search for a new president. UW’s search committee interviewed their only candidate yesterday. Two thousand students and faculty members signed a petition yesterday demanding the school try again. They are upset that they didn’t have a say, and that the candidate, University of Alaska System President Jim Johnsen, isn’t from within the UW System. CAMPGROUNDS FIRE UP

Wisconsin’s campgrounds are open once again, but there are still some coronavirus restrictions in place. The Department of Natural Resources yesterday said campgrounds are opening today for the first time since the outbreak began. You’ll need a reservation and to bring your own firewood. Bathrooms and showers at campgrounds will be open, but observation towers, playgrounds, snack stands and rental shops will be closed.

FANS READY TO JUMP AROUND

Most Badger fans appear ready to return to Camp Randall in the fall. The school yesterday said about 85 percent of season ticket holders renewed their tickets for the 2020 season. That’s about a ten percent drop from last year, but a high enough number given the uncertainty over what this next college football season will look like. The University of Wisconsin is supposed to open its season at home on September 4th against IU.

WI COVID-19 HOSPITALIZATIONS AND DEATHS ON RISE

The number of hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 continues to rise.   Wisconsin Department of Health Services today reported an increase  of 44 hospitalizations and 15 deaths from yesterday.  All-in-all there are over 21-thousand-300 positive COVID cases in the state.  Six-hundred-and-61 Wisconsinites have died from the coronavirus.

PAPER MILL TO CLOSE

Wisconsin Rapids paper mill is closing indefinitely.  Verso Corporation announced yesterday that the COVID-19 pandemic caused a decline in demand for paper from several industries which really hit their bottom line.   The Wisconsin Rapids Mill will close by the end of next month with a skeleton crew remaining to maintain the building.

VICTIMS IDENTIFIED, SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN RUSK CO. HOMICIDE

Law enforcement in Rusk County are investigating the deaths of two individuals in the town of Sheldon. On June 7th the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a home in Sheldon after family visited the home and discovered the two residents deceased. The victims are a married couple who live at the home, 73 year old Robert Rosolowski and 70 year old Bonnie Mae Rosolowski. Investigators have ruled this case a double homicide, and law enforcement have arrested and booked

RAINFALL TO AFFECT TRAIL CLOSURES

Heavy rainfall forecasted over a portion of western Wisconsin for this afternoon and evening, with localized rainfall amounts of 3-4 inches possible in Eau Claire, will likely result in increased levels on the Chippewa River in Eau Claire. At 10 a.m. the Chippewa River gauge at Grand Avenue read 760 feet, which is 13 feet below the flood stage reading of 773 feet.  The National Weather Service has projected the Chippewa River to rise to 766 feet later this week.  As the

HEADS UP, LOOK UP!

Starting in late June the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will begin another round of aerial treatments to control gypsy moth in 15 counties. Phase two targets adult male moths, whereas phase one earlier this spring targeted gypsy moth caterpillars. Residents in the following counties can expect loud, low-flying, yellow planes as early as 7 a.m. through mid-July: Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Crawford, Douglas, Dunn, Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Polk, Rusk, Trempealeau, and Washburn.
