BLOOMER MAN ACCUSED OF FL MURDER

A Bloomer man is accused of murdering a married couple in Florida.  A criminal complaint says Alex Zwiefelhofer and another man murdered the couple near a church after meeting for a gun sale in 2018.  The complaint claims the men killed the couple so they could pay for travel costs out of the country.  Zwiefelhofer was arrested in connection with the case back in May, but the details are just now being released.  Zwiefelhofer is the son of Bloomer police

HWY CLOSED AFTER MILK SPILL

A milk truck crash is being blamed for causing a lengthy closure on County Highway O in Cadott.  Police say The truck tipped over and spilled milk on the highway near 240th Street around 3:30 yesterday afternoon.  The highway was closed for about four hour after the crash.  It’s unclear what caused the truck to tip over.

PUBLIC ASKED TO KEEP WATCH FOR LOOTERS

Chippewa County residents are concerned about looters stealing things from people impacted by last week’s tornado.  The county sheriff’s department says it hasn’t made any looting arrests but it’s received calls about a suspicious person leaving a cleanup site with a truck-load of materials.  The sheriff’s department wants people who see anything suspicious to call and report it.

LOCAL COACH SWINGS FOR FENCES

From the Cards to the Tigers…A Chippewa Falls native is the new hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers.  The team announced this week quality control coach Joe Vavra will take over as hitting coach in 2020.  Vavra was the hitting coach for the Minnesota Twins from 2006 to 2012 when current Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire was manager there.  The Tigers finished the 2019 season with the worst record in Major League Baseball, 47-and-114.

Several members of the Green Bay Packers took time off from practice this week to help build a new playground at Center Street Park.  It’s part of the NFL’s Huddle for 100 campaign that is meant to inspire a million people to volunteer 100 minutes to contribute to their communities.

EF-3MILLION DOLLAR$ IN DAMAGE

New information and numbers are being released about the EF-3 tornado that went through the Town of Wheaton on September 24th.  The Chippewa County Emergency Management Director says the damage estimate has now reached over 3-million dollars.  That includes the cost of repairing or replacing 29 homes that were affected by the twister.  The rough estimate has been submitted to the state.

OPENING THE DOOR TO FEEDBACK ON TRANSIT CENTER

Eau Claire is looking for feedback on a new transit transfer center.  They held an open house yesterday at the current transfer center that has been open since 1985.  Eau Claire Transit wants to know what bus users are hoping for in a new transfer center.  They’ll hold two more open houses before the approximately 21-million dollar project is started.

SCREEN TIME

The Eau Claire City-County Health Department is using October to remind women to get breast cancer screenings.  October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month nationally.  In Eau Claire, health officials say just 54-percent of women ages 65 to 74  enrolled in Medicare got an annual mammography screening in 2016.  They are working with the Wisconsin Well Women Program to provide breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women statewide.

GOLD STAR FOR GREEN EFFORTS

A local school district is saving over 350-thousand dollars a year on energy costs.  A newly-released Focus On Energy study shows the La Crosse School District is one of several that has seen a 23-percent drop in energy use.  The district says they’ve avoided over 10-million dollars in energy costs since 2002.  They want to continue energy efficient projects, like continuing to install LED lights and improving the boilers.
