SLIME AND LEGOS LEAD TO LEARNING

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Chippewa Valley Technical College are teaching kids about science, technology, engineering, and math.  The two colleges set up stations at the Eau Claire County Fair yesterday where kids could learn about different jobs that involve STEM topics.  Students were able to participate in hands-on activities such as making slime and playing with Legos.

A La Crosse dental clinic is back open at a building downtown.  Reports say the Dental Specialties Clinic opened inside the former Wettstein building, now renamed the Gunderson Downtown Building.  The clinic had been located at the hospital for the last 35 years.  Oral and maxillofacial surgeries will still happen at the hospital.

MORE STORMS HIT OUR AREA

It’s going to be another day of looking at storm damage in western Wisconsin.  The National Weather Service is trying to figure out if the damage in Barron and Polk counties from yesterday’s line of storms came from straight line winds or a tornado.  A neighbor says they saw a funnel cloud in Barron County, and radar indicted strong winds.  Forecasters say the latest line of storms knocked down trees and knocked down power lines in both counties.

LACROSSE JUDGE FIRES BACK AFTER CRITICISM

One of La Crosse County’s judges is trying to explain why many criminal suspects in the county don’t spend much time in jail.  Judge Scott Horne penned an op-ed in the La Crosse Tribune yesterday.  He says La Crosse’s acting police chief is wrong to say he cannot protect the community because judges are not keeping repeat offenders locked-up.  Horne says Wisconsin law requires judges to consider a signature bond as the first option, and allows police to show that someone should

STORIES FROM THE WATER

There is a new shipwreck to add to the lore of the Great Lakes.  Crews say they found what’s left of the S.R. Kirby off the coast of the Upper Peninsula in Lake Superior.  The ship sank in a storm in 1916, just two people survived.  The find will allow researchers to not only document the ship’s final resting place, but better tell the story and history of the lakes.

ARREST MADE IN CASE OF MISSING WI BROTHERS

Police in Missouri say they have the man who drove the missing Diemel brothers’ truck in custody, but they still don’t know what happened to the brothers.  The sheriff in Caldwell County, Missouri arrested Garland “Joey” Nelson over the weekend for driving the missing Wisconsin brothers’ truck.  That’s the truck that was found near Kansas City last weekend.  The sheriff says he still doesn’t know what happened to Nicholas and Justin Diemel, but the sheriff says his investigation is now a death

WI SENATOR FIRES BACK; DAIRY FARMERS SUFFERING

A Republican senator is firing back at President Donald Trump.  Ron Johnson disputed the President’s conclusion Friday that farmers are over the hump and doing well during the trade war, saying in fact they’re suffering.  Wisconsin dairy farmers have been struggling since a drop-in milk prices five years ago due to over-production and exporting issues.  Nearly 700 dairy farms closed in 2018 statewide.

SPEEDING LEADS TO 2ND OWI FOR WI WOMAN

A 48 year old woman picked up a 2nd offense OWI over the weekend. It was a little before 8 on Friday night when a WI State Trooper stopped a vehicle for speeding in a 70 mph zone, on Interstate 94 in St. Croix County. A subsequent investigation, including standardized field sobriety testing, showed that Evelyn Sanders was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. PATTERSON CONTINUES TO SERVE SENTENCE OUT OF WI

The man who kidnapped Jayme Closs and killed her parents is now in a New Mexico prison.  A New Mexico Corrections Department employee tells the Las Cruces Sun News that 22-year-old Jake Patterson was transferred from a Wisconsin maximum security prison earlier this month.  Patterson was given a life sentence for shooting both of Closs’s parents to death last October and holding the 13-year-old captive in his cabin for almost three months.

TALL SHIPS SAIL IN TO GREEN BAY

The Tall Ships are in port for the festival in Green Bay.  Ships started arriving earlier this week for the Nicolet Bank Tall Ship Festival underway today.  The festival came through three years ago and businesses near the Fox River have been preparing for its return ever since.  Because of high water under the Tower Drive Bridge some of the ships did have trouble coming into port, but they’re now ready to show off their beauty for the next few
