PHILLIPS SENIOR CENTER OPENS AGAIN

The L.E. Phillips Senior Center is open again after closing at the beginning of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  The center was closed for nearly three months and now, seniors are finally able to come in and socialize.  Executive Director Mary Pica-Anderson said staff is trying to find out what they can creatively bring in to help people feel safe.  For now, they’re moving tables six feet apart, no longer offering shared treats and coffee, and requiring all seniors to wear

MUSEUM EXPLORES OPENING

The Children’s Museum will open next month. Executive Director Michael McHorney said the museum set a tentative opening date of July 1st. Common play areas will be sanitized regularly, and the museum will have limited attendance during each session. Members and general admission can be registered online.

WI MOVES FORWARD IN FIGHT AGAINST CORONAVIRUS

Two key measuring sticks in Wisconsin’s coronavirus fight are falling. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services yesterday reported 203 positive tests, and over seven thousand negative tests. The daily positive-test-rate remains under three percent. DHS reported no coronavirus deaths yesterday, that’s the first time that happened in nearly a month. There is also good news when it comes to the number of people being treated in the hospital. DHS says 322 people are being treated for the virus. That’s down from over 400

MAN FACING BOND JUMPING CHARGES

A man out of jail for another crime is facing new charges in a child sexual assault case. Prosecutors in Eau Claire filed charges yesterday against Gerardo Lugardo. Police say he assaulted a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old in Eau Claire. Lugardo was out on bond before his arrest. He’s now facing bond jumping charges.

PROTESTS CONTINUE IN MADISON

Protesters in Madison are making their priorities clear to Wisconsin lawmakers. Protesters last night painted ‘Defund the Police’ in huge yellow letters on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. That’s the street that leads directly to the State Capitol. Protesters were out in the streets of Madison for the tenth straight night last night. They did not have permission to paint in the street.

MILWAUKEE ZOO TO OPEN

Milwaukee’s zoo is ready to open its doors. Milwaukee County Zoo managers yesterday said they will open Saturday. Visitors will be allowed by reservation only, and indoor buildings at the zoo will be closed. Visitors will also be required to wear a mask while they look at the animals. BAIL SET AT $1 MILLION

The ex-Minneapolis cop who held George Floyd down for nearly 9 minutes was in court today, and bail set at $1 Million. Derek Chauvin had a short court hearing this morning where a judge said he can’t contact Floyd’s family, have a gun or work in law enforcement.  It Chauvin doesn’t agree to those conditions then bail goes to $1.25-million.  Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder.  He’s expected to make a plea at his next hearing on June 29th.

TROPICAL STORM TO LEAK INTO WI

Remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal are expected to reach Wisconsin this week.  The last time tropical weather reached the southern part of the Badger State was in 1998 with the tail end of Hurricane Gilbert.  Cristobal is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds tomorrow afternoon and into Wednesday.

CHILD CARE COUNTS BEGINS COVID-19 PAYMENTS

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) awarded just over $32 million to 2,367 early care and education providers through the first period of the Child Care Counts: COVID-19 Emergency Payment Program. The application window for the second period of funding opens today. The first round of payments, totaling $32.21 million covers child care provider activity from March 12 to April 11. Eligible child care providers who applied during the first payment window will begin receiving their payments this week through

MORE FOOD OPTIONS FOR WI FAMILIES
