SCHOOL AID ESTIMATES RELEASED

Most of Wisconsin’s local schools are getting more money from the state. The Department of Public Instruction yesterday released its general school aid estimate for the next school year. DPI says, overall, schools will split about five billion-dollars. That’s up three-and-a-half percent from the last school year. Not every school will see more though. DPI says 114 of the state’s 421 school districts will see less money from Madison.

WI CORONAVIRUS CASE COUNT TICKS UP, HOSPITALIZATIONS DOWN

Eau Claire County’s public health director says about a third of people who’ve recently tested positive for the coronavirus don’t know where they picked it up. Lieske Giese yesterday said there’s been 100 new positive tests in the past two weeks. That brings Eau Claire County’s total to 240 since March. Giese did not say if any of the new cases have landed anyone in the hospital. She did say that 176 of those 240 people have fully recovered. On

A crash turns fatal in Wilson. It was a little after 2 in the afternoon on Wednesday, July 1st when crews were dispatched to the intersection of CTH H and Henneman Rd, Township of Wilson, to investigate a motorcycle vs. SUV crash. We now know the names of those involved in a wrong way vehicle crash in Jackson County. It was just before 10 on Wednesday night when Officers responded to a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 westbound near Hixton. LOCAL COUNTIES APPROVED FOR NEW PROGRAM

There could soon be fewer people spending time in jail in the Chippewa Valley. Both Eau Claire and Chippewa counties have been selected to be a part of a pre-trial monitoring program. The idea is to quiz people who’ve been arrested, then determine if they need to stay in jail or if they can be released ahead of trial. NEW CLASS AIMS FOR EQUALITY

There is a new class for incoming students at UW-Eau Claire. The university yesterday announced an equity, diversity, and inclusion training program. Director Jodi Thessing-Ritter says the idea is to get students “engaged” so they can be a part of UW-EC’s inclusive campus. The class is a 50 minute online training that includes quizzes and videos. New and incoming students are required to take the class, but won’t get any credits for completing it.

Wisconsin’s economic development office says some jobs will not come back when the state fully reopens. The WEDC on Tuesday sent its report on the economic impact of the coronavirus to lawmakers. In addition to noting which businesses have been hardest hit in Wisconsin, namely tourism and the service sector, the report says many jobs are gone for good. In an effort to keep the community informed and to be transparent about decision making, Chippewa County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) announced a new local COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is broken down by three groupings: disease occurrence, healthcare availability, and public health response. BODY OF MISSING BOATER RECOVERED

The body of a missing boater is recovered from Lake Kegonsa.  The Dane County Sheriff’s Office received the report on Sunday that a man jumped from a pontoon boat and didn’t resurface.  At least one boat launch was closed temporarily during the two-day search.  Authorities have not identified the victim whose body was recovered shortly after 7:00 last night.

VICTIM OF HATE CRIME THANKS COMMUNITY FOR SUPPORT

 The victim of a hate crime is thanking the Madison community for its support.  Althea Bernstein and her family issued a statement today saying the attack last week has been a traumatic experience physically, mentally and emotionally for the 18-year-old.  They say Althea is receiving an outpouring of support from friends, family and neighbors.   Bernstein suffered second and third degree burns to her face after a white man shouted a racial slur, walked up to her car as she waited
