MAN FINED FOR KILLING BLACK BEAR

A Shawano County man pays nearly 500-dollars in fines for illegally killing a protected wild animal.  Ronald Erdmann was cited for killing a mother black bear in the town of Richmond earlier this month.  Her cubs were captured and relocated to a licensed rehabilitation facility.

PRIDE MONTH SEES SUPREME COURT VICTORY

It’s a big day for the LGBTQ community with an historic win at the Supreme Court.  The high court said federal law prohibits workplace discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender persons.  In other words, workers cannot be fired over sexual orientation and gender identity.  The ruling was 6-3.  Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Neil Gorsuch ruled with the high court’s four liberals in the majority.  Gorsuch was President Trump’s first Supreme Court’s appointee in 2017.

FIREWORKS CAUSING SOME SPARKS IN CITY

This year’s fourth of July fireworks will be set off from Plank Hill in Eau Claire. The City Council said Plank Hill was chosen for its elevation, so people all over the city could see the show, but some residents say it’s a dangerous spot for area homes and businesses. A Change-dot-org petition is going around urging the City Council to move the fireworks show from the East Hill neighborhood to its traditional Carson Park location.

CHIPPEWA FALLS BUSINESS OWNERS OPEN TO RELIEF OPTIONS

A new emergency relief program for small business owners in Chippewa Falls is available. City leaders and the Chippewa Falls Redevelopment Authority created a one-time grant program to help small businesses operate and reopen businesses downtown. WI SEES DIP IN CORONAVIRUS HOSPITALIZATIONS

Wisconsin’s latest coronavirus count shows a dip in the number of people being treated for the virus in the hospital. The state’s Department of Health Services says there are fewer people being treated in the hospital than last week. As of yesterday, 289 people were in the hospital because of the coronavirus, 101 of them were in the ICU. That is down from over 300 last week, and over 400 two weeks ago. FIRE DAMAGES CHIPPEWA FALLS APARTMENT

A family of three is okay after a fire at their apartment in Chippewa Falls. Firefighters say neighbors helped rescue them from the roof of their apartment after the fire started early yesterday morning. No one was hurt, but the fire did extensive damage to the apartment building. Investigators are looking for a cause of the fire.

UW PLANS TO RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM

UW President Ray Cross said students will return for in-person classes at every UW campus this fall. The University of Wisconsin System is getting back to business. The university over the weekend said it will open its 13 campuses to students for the fall semester. The plan is to have in-person classes and have students living on campus. Just what that will look like will depend on which campus. And here in our area, we know what that will be for UW
