SOUTH SIDE PLANS GO SOUTH

There won’t be any new high-end apartments on Eau Claire’s south side.  Last night the city council denied the building of multi-family apartment complexes off Interstate-92, saying it would bring too much car traffic to the area.  The council did approve the rezoning of a vacant lot off Seymour Drive and Andover Avenue to be turned into Woodland Estates.

SNOW AND COSTS PILE UP

It costs a lot of money to clear snow from the roads, and Eau Claire County has seen lots of snow in 2019. County Highway Commissioner Jon Johnson yesterday said he expects to end this year 60 thousand-dollars over budget. The county sets aside about 800 thousand-dollars a year for snow removal. Johnson says there is some emergency money that he can use to cover the extra expense, so he doesn’t think he’ll need to ask county leaders for more.

IT’LL GO TO VOTE

Voters will pick the next city council member in Eau Claire. The city council last night decided to leave former alderwoman Laura Benjamin’s seat open until the April election. There was talk of filling the seat on a temporary basis, but the council decided against that. Benjamin left the council last month after just a few months on the job.

CARSON PARK RENOVATIONS SWING FOR FENCES

The people who want to update Carson Park Baseball Stadium need your help, and 800 thousand-dollars. The Carson Park Capital Campaign Renovation Committee said they are short of their three million-dollar goal. The hope is to add new bleachers, and update things like the dugouts and restrooms, as well as make the stadium more handicapped accessible.

WIAA BLOWS WHISTLE ON PARENTS

Yelling at the ref at your kids’ high school football game could soon be against the law in Wisconsin. A handful of lawmakers are supporting a proposal that would make it a misdemeanor to harass or intimidate referees or other officials. The WIAA says the idea is to get parents to behave better. OLDEST WI WOMAN PASSES AWAY

The oldest woman living in Wisconsin passes away.  According to her obituary Charlotte Strehlow was 111 years old when she died on Friday at an assisted living home in Merrill.  Strehlow was the 22nd oldest person in the United States and the 76th oldest in the world at the time of her death.

SAFETY WARNINGS HEAT UP IN COLD TEMPS

Wisconsin fire officials are reminding people to turn off the holiday lights and blow out any candles before they head to bed.  More than one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles.  Authorities say these are avoidable disasters.  It’s also advised to keep Christmas trees and live evergreen decorations away from any heat source like a fireplace, space heater or candles.

LAND DESIGNATIONS FOR PRESERVATION ANNOUNCED

Starting January 1, 2020, about 74,148 acres in Clark, Grant, and Sauk counties will be eligible to enter into farmland preservation agreements with the designation of three new agricultural enterprise areas (AEAs). This will bring Wisconsin’s farmland preservation totals to 40 AEAs in portions of 27 counties, 112 towns, and the Bad River Reservation. UPDATE FROM LEON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

We have an update after an investigation into an officer involved shooting incident from last month. It was on November 5, when the Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy and sergeant, and a Sparta Police Officer were involved in critical incident that resulted in the death of Michael Nguyen. Police officers from Sparta say they shot an armed man outside of a local bar Tuesday after he refused to drop his gun. It happened at a bar in the town of Leon.

HIT AND RUN LEADS TO PRISON

A Chippewa Falls man is going to prison in connection with a hit and run in Eau Claire.  Court documents say Byer Nevins was recently sentenced to four years in prison followed by four years of supervised release.  Nevins was accused of hitting a car near the Chippewa River Bridge and driving away back in August.
