ALTOONA VETERANS TRIBUTE TRAIL TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE

The City of Altoona and Eau Claire County Veterans Tribute Foundation are holding an Open House event for the Veterans Tribute Trail. At this event, members of the Veterans Tribute Foundation will provide an update on their plans for the Veterans Tribute Trail. This event will take place on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 from 6–8PM at the River Prairie Center. The River Prairie Center is located at 1445 Front Porch Place, in Altoona.

GARAGE FIRE LEAVES ONE DEAD

One person is dead from a garage fire in Monroe County.  The county sheriff’s office says the fire broke out in the Town of Oakdale near Tomah Monday and 49-year-old Richard Siess was found dead inside.  The sheriff’s office says it got a call from Siess’ wife when the fire started saying her husband might be inside.  Foul play isn’t suspected.

QUICK RESPONSE KEEPS OIL FROM IGNITING

A semi truck is destroyed after catching on fire in Chippewa County Monday night.  Volunteer firefighters say the truck caught fire on Highway 29 right in front of the fire station in Wheaton.  Because of this, firefighters were able to get to the fire quickly and keep about 80-thousand pounds of oil from spilling and igniting.

ONALASKA CANDIDATE OFF THE LIST

One candidate is out of the race for Onalaska mayor.  Robert Muth dropped out of the race Tuesday morning and announced he’s endorsing Jim Binash.  Binash is taking on Terry Bauer and interim Mayor Kim Smith.  The primary is on February 18th and will narrow down the field to two candidates.

LOCAL FAVORITE PLANS TO REOPEN

A Chippewa County restaurant destroyed by a fire last year is re-opening.  The View at Lake Wissota caught fire on February 12th, 2019 and the building was considered a total loss.  Now, The View’s Facebook page says it will have a grand opening sometime in mid to late January.  An exact date hasn’t been announced.

ALTOONA SCHOOL EMPLOYEES ON TRACKS TO BE HONORED

Two Altoona School District employees are being honored in Madison today.  Reports say Special Education and Pupil Services Director Alan McCutcheon and special education teacher Melissa Martin will be recognized as Hometown Heroes.  The two came up with the Think Tank Program, a program that keeps special education students in a better learning environment.

MAN MOVING AHEAD WITH MENTAL HEALTH DEFENSE

The man shot by a deputy inside a Chippewa Falls motel last summer is moving ahead with a mental health defense. Christopher Knyphausen this week entered a not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect plea. He’s accused of threatening to shoot people at the Indianhead Motel back in August. There’s no word when Knyphausen is due back in court or due to be examined by doctors.

THEFT CHARGES ADD UP FOR EC BOOKKEEPER

A bookkeeper at an Eau Claire metal company is looking at charges after investigators say she took over 100-thousand-dollars from her boss. Prosecutors say 38-year-old Sarah Girard actually took closer to 250-thousand-dollars, but paid about half of that back. Police say Girard told her bosses at Don’s Sheet Metal that she took the money so she could keep custody of her kids. She’s now facing felony theft charges.

NEW RED BARN COULD GET GREEN LIGHT

There could soon be a new big red barn at the Northern Wisconsin Fairgrounds in Chippewa Falls. Fair managers yesterday said they are looking at a new multi-purpose facility for the fairgrounds. Crew tore the old barn down last spring. Fairgrounds director Rusty Volk says they are speaking with 600 local businesses to see what kind of venue the fairgrounds needs.
