The race for Congress in western Wisconsin is set. Derrick Van Orden won yesterday’s Republican primary, he will now face Democrat Ron Kind in November. Kind has been in Congress since 1997. The number of coronavirus deaths in Wisconsin has crossed a symbolic threshold. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported eight new deaths, which pushes the state to over one thousand coronavirus deaths since March.  Wisconsin has never seen a huge spike in deaths, instead the state’s coronavirus deaths have been steady. Vaping in Eau Claire will now be treated like smoking, meaning you can’t do it inside. Eau Claire’s city council last night approved a vaping ban. It applies to bars, restaurants, shops, and any other public indoor spaces.  Eau Claire has banned smoking inside since 2008. The fine for vaping indoors is anywhere between 60 and 500 dollars.

Wisconsin’s unemployment backlog is now over 600 thousand claims. The Department of Workforce Development yesterday said more than 620 thousand claims are waiting to be processed. Some of those claims date all the way back to March. More than four million people have been paid by the state’s unemployment office since March, those payments total over three billion-dollars. DWD has blamed the backlog on slow computers and input issues at their office in Madison.

Former VP Joe Biden has his running mate and it’s California Senator Kamala Harris.  House Minority Whip Jim Clyburn reacts to the news. A somber milestone is passed in Wisconsin as health officials confirm over a thousand people have died of COVID-19 in the state.  Governor Tony Evers says even one death from the coronavirus is one too many.  There were 524 positive cases confirmed today along with eight new deaths.

Since departing its homeport of Norfolk, Virginia in January 2020 for the ship’s Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), the aircraft carrier remained underway and deployed to the Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
