EEE Claims Life In Chippewa Co.

 A person is dead from eastern equine encephalitis or EEE.   Wisconsin and Chippewa County health officials yesterday said it is the first such death recorded in the state this year.  The virus causes brain inflammation.  It is spread to horses, other mammals and more rarely to humans via the bite of an infected mosquito.  Health officials say horses in three northwestern Wisconsin counties have been diagnosed with the disease.

WI Gets More Candidate Attention

Democratic vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris is planning a trip to Wisconsin.  Harris is scheduled to make a campaign stop in Milwaukee on Monday.  Vice President Mike Pence is also in the Badger State on Monday to visit Dairyland Power Cooperative in La Crosse.

Blake Appears In Virtual Hearing

Jacob Blake appears at a bond hearing from his hospital bed in Kenosha.  Blake was shot by police last month and had a virtual hearing today regarding a separate case from July.  He appeared before the judge where a signature bond of ten-thousand-dollars was set.  Blake was also ordered not to have contact with the victim who alleges he committed a sexual assault.

Local Airport to Receive Boost

Chippewa Valley Regional Airport in Eau Claire is among those airports receiving an Airport Safety and Infrastructure Grant through the FAA.  Over a-billion-dollars in federal funding was announced this week for airports around the country including Chippewa Valley Regional.  It receives nearly two-million-dollars to acquire snow removal equipment.  Five-point-seven-million-dollars will be used at Trux Field to build a taxiway and Central Wisconsin Airport will receive over 16-million-dollars to reconstruct a taxiway and runway.

UW Madison Greek Society Hit With Covid-19

Members of nine fraternities and sororities testing positive for COVID-19 prompt the University of Wisconsin-Madison to order a quarantine.  Those members must quarantine at their off-campus houses.  Other members will be tested on September 8th as a precaution.  A violation of isolation of quarantine may result in a fine up to ten-thousand-dollars.

Gas Dips a Bit

The average cost of regular gas in Wisconsin is down six-cents-a-gallon compared to a week ago.  Triple-A says the price per gallon in the Badger State is $2.05 today.  Drivers are paying an average of 1.96 in Janesville, 1.99 in Oshkosh, in our area, we are about $2.00 a gallon in Eau Claire.

Gift Card Scam Present in Eau Claire

The Eau Claire Police Department is warning against a gift card scam. Police say they’ve taken several reports of the scam that claims the caller is law enforcement and tells the victim to provide their social security number or other personal information in exchange for a gift card. Police say this is a scam, and a police officer would not ask for any personal information. If you get a call like this, they recommend hanging up.

Miller Park Untapped

The Brewers rename Miller Park to American Family Field. The forthcoming 15-year-partnership with American Family insurance will begin January 1st. The new field will replace a 20-year agreement between the Brewers and Milwaukee’s Miller Brewing Company.

Political Signage Reminder

If you’re placing political signage in your yard or in front of your business, you may want to pay attention to where you’re putting it. A Wisconsin statute prohibits signs of any kind on sidewalks or within street rights of way. The Chippewa Falls Police Department says they’ve seen an increase in signs placed where they shouldn’t be, and they’re subject to removal without notice. Big Screen Has Small Town Connection

A new faith-based film written and produced by a Chippewa Falls native, is showing tonight at Micon Cinemas. Andrea Polnaszek says her movie Switched is about being responsible on social media. She says the message is good timing, too, because more teens are at home during the pandemic. Movie premieres usually happen in Hollywood, but thanks to the local theaters, the film premiered last night with more showings tonight.
