WI Covid-19 Death Toll Climbs

The coronavirus death toll is up by 60 following data released today by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.  The DHS says 172 more people were recently hospitalized with the virus. In the last 24 hours, there were over 46-hundred positive COVID tests confirmed since yesterday.  More than three-thousand-500 Wisconsin residents have been killed by the coronavirus since the outbreak began. Curtain Raises on Live Venue CARES Act Funding

Wisconsin’s live music and entertainment venues are getting a little financial relief.  Governor Tony Evers today announced 15-million-dollars in grants awarded to 96 live venues to help balance the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.  Eligible recipients can be awarded up to 500-thousand-dollars thanks to money from the CARES Act. Baldwin Urges National Guard Funding

Flags Lowered to Honor First Responder

Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #96 ordering the flags of the United States and the state of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff in honor of Cpt. Kelly Lynn Raether of the Town of Ixonia Fire & EMS. Raether passed away on Nov. 26, 2020 after contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty as she responded to the emergency medical needs of a COVID-19 patient.  Executive order #96 is effective immediately and ends at sunset on Sat., Dec. 5, 2020.

Snow-Go for Snowshoe Champs

Visit Eau Claire, along with CORBA and the Eau Claire Sports Commission, announced that the 2021 US National Snowshoe Championships will be postponed until 2022 due to the impact of COVID-19. The event is still set to take place in Eau Claire at Lowes Creek County Park with a date yet to be announced. WI Prisons Hit by Covid-19

Three more of Wisconsin’s prison inmates have died from COVID-19. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections announced the new deaths Wednesday bringing the total across the state to 14. Prisoner deaths are recorded as coronavirus related if a coroner confirms the virus was an underlying cause or significant contributor to the death.

It’s the season for snowy owls in Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the first snowy owl was spotted and photographed in Dane County in early November, but the Dane County Humane Society says they found the bird sick, and it passed away unexpectedly. At the end of the month, the Department of Natural Resources reported three more snowy owls in Chippewa, Lincoln, and Bayfield counties. Weekly Jobless Claims Dip Below Expectations

The number of jobless claims filed last week are dropping well below expectations.  About 712-thousand Americans filed first-time unemployment claims last week.  Analysts were expecting the claims to reach about 780-thousand.  About five-and-a-half-million Americans continue to make unemployment claims.  Earlier this week a government watchdog reported the Department of Labor was undercounting the number of people receiving unemployment benefits.  It also said they were underpaying them from a special program Congress authorized to address the economic fallout from the pandemic.
