Eau Claire is getting a new fast-food restaurant…again. Five Guys says a new location will pop up on Frontage Road off of Clairemont Avenue next to Wingstop. The burger restaurant will open sometime later this year. Five Guys used to have a location in Oakwood Mall, but it closed a year ago. The new location will be the eighteenth in Wisconsin.

Cause of Fire Traced to Kitchen

The cause of a house fire in Onalaska is being determined.  The fire happened on Saturday night as a result of cooking.  When firefighters arrived at the scene, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and the house was considered a total loss.  None of the residents or crews who responded were hurt.

Lawmakers Connect Bills to Family Budgets

Democrat lawmakers in Madison are introducing a set of measures aimed at reducing various costs for residents.  The bills cover programs that the party has supported before, including free school lunch and breakfast and reduced prescription drug prices.  Another proposal would provide tax relief to more lower-income homeowners and renters by extending the Homestead Credit Program to individuals making up to 35-thousand dollars per year.  Politically, it is unlikely that Democrats will get much support for the initiatives from Republicans

Libraries Log On to Cybersecurity Pilot Program

A total of eight school systems and public libraries in Wisconsin are participating in a nationwide cybersecurity initiative.  The Federal Communications Commission is running the pilot program at over 700 sites in the U.S.  The three-year trial is meant to help evaluate how effective the FCC’s universal service fund is at providing resources to protect computer networks.  Schools and libraries in Madison, Milwaukee, Beloit, and Lac du Flambeau are involved in the program.

Cash App Accused of Playing Dirty?

The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions and other state regulatory agencies across the country are accusing the company behind Cash App of violating banking rules.  Wisconsin DFI officials are involved in an effort to investigate Block, Inc. to determine whether the firm has kept up with all anti-money laundering regulations.  Block is paying out an 80-million-dollar penalty under a multi-state settlement and they are agreeing to hire a consultant to generate and submit a report on Cash App usage.  Banks

Jacobs Invites Retired Veteran to Big Game

Packers running back Josh Jacobs is inviting a retired Marine Corps veteran to attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans.  Jacobs and other NFL players are partnering with USAA to offer the experience for some service members.  Retired Sergeant Major Kevin Bennett and his wife Ivette will meet with Jacobs and other NFL stars before the game kicks off.  Bennett served in the Marines for more than 30 years and has been a Packers fan since the early 1960’s.

4000 Foundation is announcing its plans for the 33rd Annual Great Tri-State Rail Sale.  The event is happening on Saturday, January 25th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the La Crosse Center.  The event is a railroad hobby sale, model railroad flea market and swap meet.  Funds raised will go to the La Crosse Short Line Railroad Heritage Museum in Copeland Park.  More information can be found on the 4000 Foundation website.
