Voting Static: DOJ Threatens to Withhold Federal Funding

The U.S. Department of Justice is accusing the Wisconsin Elections Commission of violating federal law.  On Wednesday the DOJ sent a letter to the commission threatening to withhold federal funding.  It accuses the commission of not providing a complaint process for state voters.  The DOJ says this violates the Help America Vote Act.

WIAA State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse

The 2025 WIAA State Track and Field Championships will kick off on Friday in La Crosse.  Over 22-thousand people are expected to attend the two-day event.  City officials anticipate the event will bring in approximately four million dollars to the region.

EC Eddy St. Bridge Closing for Repairs

The Eddy Street Bridge in Eau Claire will close on Friday for repairs.  This comes after an inspection found structural flaws on the bridge, resulting in a weight limit.  The repairs are expected to begin at the end of the month and take three to five days to complete.  The bridge will remain open to pedestrian and bike traffic.

WI Connection to National Case

Law enforcement in Washington state is looking for a man originally from Southeastern Wisconsin after his three daughters were found dead near a campground.  Wenatchee Police in Washington say the mother of the three girls, ages nine, eight, and five, reported them missing May 30 after they didn’t return home from scheduled visitation with their father.  The three girls bodies were found on Monday near their father’s truck at a campground, and investigators say their cause of death is likely

Court Date Pushed Back for Accused Kidnapper

The arraignment for Gary Day, accused of abducting a pregnant teenager from Beaver Dam, has been postponed by two weeks.  Court records show the hearing is now set for June 17.  Day faces state and federal charges, including child abduction and child enticement, in Wisconsin and Nebraska.  He was arrested in Nebraska in April after an Amber Alert was issued for the teen.

WI Drivers Add Emergency Contact Info

More than 82-thousand Wisconsin drivers added emergency contact information to their licenses since the option was first introduced last year.  The To Inform Families First Law was signed into law in 2023.  Wisconsinites can add an emergency contact to their record online at WITH AN EASY CLICK HERE. No visit to a physical location is necessary.

Tomah Issues Water Advisory

The City of Tomah has issued a drinking water advisory after elevated nitrate levels were found in Well 14.  The well was taken offline after a test in May showed nitrate at 14-point-four milligrams per liter, above the safe limit of ten. Residents are urged not to give tap water to infants or pregnant women.  Tomah is working with the Wisconsin DNR on solutions and will provide updates as available.

Reward Offered In Killing Of Bull Elk In Jackson County

Two organizations are putting up a reward to find the person responsible for killing a bull elk in Jackson County earlier this year.  The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is offering a five-thousand-dollar reward and the Bear Club is offering a five-hundred-dollar reward for information leading to the successful prosecution in the elk’s killing.  The bull was found shot to death on private property off of East Snow Creek Road on March 14th.  The elk was wearing a GPS radio collar,

La Crosse Sees Uptick in Fires

La Crosse is seeing an uptick in fires.  Officials with the La Crosse Fire Department say they typically have around 35 fires a year, but there have been 31 so far.  Department officials say while there’s no main reason for the increase, they’re urging residents to take steps to avoid fires.  This includes not being distracted while cooking and not overloading outlets.

Wigwam Building Damaged
