Say “Ahhhh”, CVTC Hosts Give Kids a Smile Event

Chippewa Valley Technical College is hosting Give Kids a Smile – an event to provide free dental care for children – in its dental clinic from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. Services include dental cleaning, x-rays, fluoride, dental sealants, fillings, and extractions, and are free to participants. Debbie Schumacher, CVTC dental programs coordinator, said the American Dental Association began the free day of dental care movement for children in 2003. Locally, CVTC is proud to also offer dental services to children.

Arson Arrest Made in Shooters Fire

On Saturday, January 18th, 2025 shortly before 5am, the Dunn County Communications Center received calls from passing motorists on I-94 of a building on fire. The location provided was Shooters Showgirls, on 850th St. in the Town of Elk Mound. Upon arrival the building was fully involved. Teen Charged With Attempted Armed Robbery

17 year old is being charged with attempted armed robbery.  On Monday night, Anthony Ulvestad was arrested and taken to the La Crosse County Jail after a victim contacted police for a gun incident.  They said they were in their car when a suspect came up to their car and broke the window with a gun.  The victim was able to drive away and Ulvestad was found to be the suspect.  Along with attempted armed robbery, the 17-year-old is also

Funding Set for WI Innocence Project

The Wisconsin Innocence Project is getting federal funding to help cover DNA testing for people who may have been wrongly convicted.  The U.S. Justice Department is approving a grant worth one-and-a-half-million dollars for the organization.  The nonprofit is planning to use the money to revisit previous cases that were closed due to the limitations of genetics testing in the past.  They will also be hiring a new investigator and two additional attorneys.

Whoa Baby, WI Birth Rates Decline

Experts believe declining birth rates are likely to cause future challenges for the state of Wisconsin.  Data from Forward Analytics shows the number of children born in the state fell by over nine percent between 2000 and 2024.  This trend may make it difficult for Wisconsin businesses to maintain an adequate workforce as time goes on, according to analysts.  The lower numbers could also lead to enrollment declines for public colleges and universities.

WI Joins Challenge to Plan To End Birthright Citizenship

Wisconsin is joining a multi-state coalition challenging President Trump’s plan to end birthright citizenship. President Trump signed an executive order that would revoke citizenship for people whose parents were illegal immigrants when they were born on US land. Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul say the change would violate the Constitution. Seventeen other states and two cities are also joining the lawsuit.

Marquette Names New VP and Director of Athletics

Marquette University is officially naming a new vice president and director of its athletics department. Mike Broeker is taking over the role, replacing Bill Scholl who is retiring after a decade at Marquette. Broeker has almost 30 years of experience in athletics administration, and served as the deputy director of athletic at Marquette for 18 years. Broeker will be introduced in his new role this Thursday at an event in the Alumni Memorial Union.
