A new report says nearly 40-thousand voters who cast indefinitely confined ballots in the November election didn’t provide any voter ID. The Menomonie Area Chamber and Visitor Center is beginning its snow sculpture contest today. The idea is to see who can be the most creative with the snow they have. The Chamber’s Ashley Demuth says there will be prizes for sculptures, but she says the whole idea is to have some fun. The only rules are that the sculptures must be family friendly and non-political.

Groundhog Day comes up again, this week.  The annual forecast offered by Punxsutawney Phil is scheduled for this Tuesday, February 2nd at 7:25-a.m. Eastern time in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  The event is part of western Pennsylvania folk tradition alive since the 1880s.  Around sunrise this Tuesday, the popular marmot will emerge from his burrow and if Phil sees his shadow, it means there’ll be six more weeks of winter.  Otherwise, if Phil doesn’t see his shadow, it’ll be an early spring

One Year Since First Coronavirus Case Confirmed in WI

It’s the anniversary of the first case of coronavirus to be treated in Madison.  Yesterday marked a year since UW Health attended to its first COVID-19 patient in University Hospital.  The patient had recently returned from a trip to China where exposure to the disease happened.  Recovery time for the patient was around a month.  It was the first case in Wisconsin and the 12th reported case in the United States.

Now What? New Rx For West Allis Field Hospital

A nearly idle COVID-19 field hospital at the State Fair Park in West Allis may soon be repurposed.  The site was originally converted and set up to treat COVID-19 patients but hasn’t had a patient since Christmas Eve.  On Friday, state health officials said one option under consideration is to turn the location into a COVID-19 vaccination hub.  The site is still in use as an outpatient clinic for those who receive antibody therapy infusions. Man Picks Up 6th OWI

An arrest in Washburn County adds another OWI to a man’s record. It was about 2:45 in the morning on Saturday, Jan 30th when  the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to a vehicle in the ditch on Fox Rd near County Rd N. A subsequent investigation including standardized field sobriety test was conducted. 60-year-old Timothy S. Ganz was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant 6th offense. A warrant was obtained for an evidentiary blood

Jack Frost is Knocking

It’s not for us here locally, but it is coming for some parts of our state. A winter storm advisory goes into effect this morning in Madison.  The weatherman says a storm system out of the southwest is expected to bring a heavy, wet snowfall starting in earnest tonight and into Sunday.  Six-or more inches of snow are predicted for counties immediately south of Dane County. Madison could get from four to six inches by midday, Sunday.

A Community Connects

Family and friends gather to remember three people who died in a house fire last week in Grant County.  A gathering of hundreds of community members took place last night in Blue River to memorialize 12-year old Fredrick Hurley and his 14-year old sister Barbara along with family friend 33-year old Andrew Brown.  The group sold items to raise funds for the families of the victims.  There are two GoFundMe pages set up as well to help out.  The Fire
