Marijuana Legislation Up in Smoke

Marijuana will not become legal in Wisconsin this year. Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu yesterday said there’s nowhere near enough Republican support to legalize pot. LeMahieu said part of the opposition comes from business owners who worry legal pot will only make the state’s under-employment problem worse. WI Jobless Rate Holds Steady

Wisconsin’s jobless rate hasn’t changed since January. The latest numbers from the Department of Workforce Development show the state’s unemployment rate for March held at three-point-eight-percent. That’s the same it’s been since the beginning of the year. The national unemployment rate last month was six-percent.

Lawsuit Claims Minority Program Discriminates

A new lawsuit says one of Wisconsin’s minority college grant programs discriminates. A Madison couple is suing over the state’s Minority Undergraduate Retention Grant program because they say their biracial son is locked-out. The couple says the program is only open to ‘some’ minorities in the state. The program is for black, Native American, Hispanic, and some Asian students. Students from other countries or nationalities are not allowed to apply.

Dunn Co. Sign Thefts Causing Safety Issues

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance. Dunn County, along with several surrounding counties, have been the victims of traffic sign thefts over the past several months. In addition to causing traffic safety issues it also cost the county highway department time and money to replace these stolen signs and the damaged posts. The most recent theft was both of the Caryville unincorporated signs and a horse and buggy warning sign from the Township of Rock Creek.

WI Daily COVID-19 Cases Continue to Trend Up

 State health officials say 943 COVID-19 cases are being reported today.  This is the third straight day with over 900 cases.  That boosts the total number of cases to over 588-thousand-500.  Three additional deaths were confirmed to raise the death toll to more than 66-hundred-and-50.  There are over 92-hundred active COVID-19 cases statewide. Closing Arguments Monday In Chauvin Case

The trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin will move to closing arguments next week.  Judge Peter Cahill addressed the jury after both sides finished presenting evidence. Chauvin himself chose not to testify today in the case where he’s accused of killing George Floyd.  The judge reminded jurors that it’s up to them on how long they deliberate on the charges against Chauvin.  He’s charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
