Eau Claire is a great place for trail-riders, or walkers, or hikers. The city is home to the second longest trail system in Wisconsin. That’s nearly 30 miles of trails around the city alone. It seems like a nice afternoon to get outside. The National Weather Service says highs could reach the low 80s in Western Wisconsin, but it could rain a bit later tonight.

Ick to the Ticks

As the weather warms up and spring sets in, ticks and other bugs are likely to come out. The Eau Claire City- County Health Department says you can welcome spring by layering up on sunscreen and bug repellent before going outside. They encourage people to wear layers to protect their skin outdoors. If found, ticks can be removed by pulling firmly upward with a pair of narrow-bladed tweezers.

Milwaukee Sees Jump in Violence

 It’s another measure of Milwaukee’s violent year. TMJ4 is reporting that Milwaukee’s non-fatal shooting total is nearly double what it was last year at this point. Numbers from the Milwaukee Police Department show there have been 153 shootings where someone didn’t die so far in 2021. Last year’s shooting total on April 1st was just 53 shootings. Milwaukee Police don’t have an explanation for the jump in shootings, but say many of them happen in the same neighborhoods between people

Flags Lowered

Flags are flying at half-staff today after President Biden issued a Presidential Proclamation to lower the U.S. flag following the attack at the U.S. Capitol on Friday.  One Capitol Police officer died and another was injured after a man rammed his car into a security checkpoint.  The suspect was shot and died moments later.  Flags will remain lowered until sunset on Tuesday.

Crash Sends Three to Hospital

The sheriff in Trempealeau County is looking into a weekend wreck that sent three people to the hospital. It happened yesterday afternoon on State Road 93 near Kuka Lane in the Town of Burnside. Deputies say it looks like one vehicle crossed the center line and smashed into an on-coming vehicle. All three people involved were taken to local hospitals.

Cadott Motel Gutted in Weekend Fire

Eight people spent part of their weekend being treated at the hospital following a fire at a motel in Cadott. Firefighters say a fire gutted the Countryside Motel in Cadott Saturday morning. The fire started on the patio, then jumped into the motel’s attic. Everyone made it out of the fire. Firefighters say seven of the people who went to the hospital were staying at the motel, but the eighth was someone who went into the motel to help get

Eight Departments Respond to Jackson Co. Fire

Firefighters are blaming the dry conditions and warm temperatures for a weekend fire in Jackson County. Crews from eight different departments responded to the fire in a farm field near Alma Center. Firefighters say about 100 hay bales burned, but they were able to save the cows and barn. The fire is one of over 150 wildfires across the state over the weekend.

Weekend Wildfires in WI

All of Wisconsin desperately needs some rain. The state’s Department of Natural Resources yesterday reported 150 wildfires over the Easter Weekend. DNR says fires have burned nearly as many acres already this year than they did in all of last year. Dry grass and brush, warm temperatures, and strong winds all drove the weekend fires. Much of the state is in-line for rain through the middle of week. DNR says it will be welcome.

WI Vaccine Eligibility Opens Up

Pretty much everyone in Wisconsin is now eligible for the coronavirus vaccine. The state’s Department of Health Services is expanding eligibility to everyone 16 and up, starting today. DHS says nearly 75-percent of people 65 and older have already gotten the vaccine, and now they want to make sure other people get the shot as well. You will continue to need a vaccine appointment, though those are becoming easier to get. DHS says it is confident it will have enough vaccine doses

WI DNR Encourages Bear Safety

It’s the beginning of bear season in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Natural Resources says this is the time of year when bears wake-up from their winter hibernation, and they are hungry. DNR says people who live in rural and wooded areas of the state should try and avoid leaving food and garbage out for bears. DNR, as always, says feeding bears can lead to trouble for people and the bears themselves.
