Below is the announcement from the Chippewa County Department of Public Health: Chippewa County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) is proud to announce Wisconsin State Senator Jesse James as the recipient of the 2025  Friend of Public Health Award. This award honors individuals who have made significant  contributions to the health and well-being of Chippewa County residents.  Senator James, representing District 23, is recognized for his steadfast commitment to  protecting children, advocating for mental health, and addressing the opioid epidemic.

The Brewers open the 2025 season today at Yankee Stadium in New York. Freddy Peralta will get the ball in the opener as the Brewers take on the New York Yankees. Most predictions have the Brewers somewhere between 83 to 86 wins this season and to compete in the NL Central race. The University Of Wisconsin Eau Claire has named a new interim chancellor. With current chancellor Jim Schmidt leaving to take a job in Virginia, Michael Carney will step into the new role. Currently, Carney is the University’s interim provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs. Carney has been with the University since 2000. He will start his new job on July 1st. A new police chief has been named in Tomah. Assistant police chief Eric Pedersen has been promoted to chief. Pederson has been with the Tomah police department since 2005. Before joining the force in Tomah, Pedersen was an MP in the US Army. Pedersen will step into his new role on April 19th.

A Neenah police officer has been fired and charged with possession of child pornography. Owen Halls has been charged with two counts of possession of child pornography. A neighboring city received an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) tip, and it happened to be Halls. The arrest on Halls was made yesterday. Halls has been with the Neenah Police Department since March of 2024.

Lawmakers are considering allowing Sandhill crane hunting in Wisconsin. Supporters of a bill in the state legislature say the cranes damage crops. The bird is protected by federal law, so Wisconsin would need to get agreement from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to open a Sandhill crane hunting season.

The Wisconsin Building Commission is deadlocked on a vote for the Governor’s 2025-2027 Capital Budget proposal. The budget included more than four-point-one billion dollars toward infrastructure projects across Wisconsin. The commission met yesterday to vote on the budget proposal, and deadlocked on a 4-4 vote. The proposal is now being sent to the Joint Finance Committee with no recommendation.

 Dunn County is searching for a new county manager after Kris Korpela recently announced her retirement, effective in August.  “I have enjoyed my career with Dunn County immensely and am grateful for the confidence the County Board of Supervisors has shown in my leadership,” Korpela said.  “The county is in a solid place financially and operationally, so it is a good time to pass the baton to a new leader.”  The county board’s Executive Committee has asked the Human Resources Department to lead the search for a new manager,
