On Wednesday, April 21, just before 5pm, a Barron County Deputy observed a van passing a car on Hwy 25, just north of Barron, in a no passing zone. As the deputy went to stop the vehicle it sped up and failed to stop for the deputy. Achase ensued for about 11 miles when the driver came to a stop on 13 1⁄2 Street and 20 1⁄2 Avenue. Public health leaders in Chippewa County are concerned with a rise in coronavirus cases. Public Health Director Angela Weideman says the county is at a severe risk level for COVID-19 and new cases are rising almost every day.  She encouraged people to continue mitigation measures like washing hands, social distancing, and wearing masks. A little over half the people who are eligible for the coronavirus vaccine in Wisconsin have gotten one dose. Julie Willems Van Dijk with the state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said 51 percent of people 16 and older have gotten a shot. She says DHS is focusing on getting those people their second shot. Vaccinations in Wisconsin have stalled, overall 41 percent of people in the state have gotten one dose of the vaccine. Madison’s mayor is laying out a two-year plan to fight climate change. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway yesterday unveiled her Climate Forward agenda. The plan focuses on green energy, including adding energy efficiency requirements for public housing and commercial buildings in the city. The mayor also wants to train workers to install solar panels, or help them find jobs planting trees or work on electric vehicles.

It will be life in prison for the man who police say opened fire in a crowded Kenosha County tavern on Sunday, if he is convicted. The D.A. in Kenosha filed formal first degree homicide charges yesterday against 24-year-old Rakayo Vinson. Sheriff’s deputies say Vinson shot and killed three people after a fight at the Somers House tavern in Somers. He’s accused of wounding three others. Investigators say the whole thing started when someone bumped into Vinson.

Wisconsin’s governor is ordering police departments under his control to review their use of force policies. The governor issued an emergency order yesterday that requires the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Wisconsin State Capitol Police, and the DNR’s Division of Public Safety to update their policies. The governor says the review is part of his demand for ‘systematic change.’ The order only applies to those three agencies. Local police departments across the state are not included.

 Southeast Wisconsin’s late-April snow is being blamed for a series of wrecks yesterday. Washington County deputies say nearly 50 cars and trucks were involved in crashes along I-41 yesterday. The wrecks closed the interstate for hours. Six people were taken to the hospital for treatment. Investigators say the interstate was slick, and heavy snow caused near whiteout conditions at some points.

Dunn County is the latest to go on the record as being against hate crimes against Asian-Americans. The county board unanimously approved a resolution last night condemning violence against Asian Americans. The over-arching message from supervisors being that because he doesn’t see hate, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
