Officers Honored for Winter Rescue

Three Eau Claire police officers are being honored for rescuing a father and his eight-year-old son from falling into an icy river in December. The Eau Claire Police Department says Officers Kaveney, Prock, and Stephens were recognized by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association this week for their quick, lifesaving actions.

Multiple Crews Report to Fire

It will likely take a little while to get more answers about a late night fire that brought several Eau Claire County fire departments to the Township of Clear Creek. Crews from Strum, Fall Creek, Augusta, Osseo, and Eau Claire all responded to  the fire last night. No one is saying what burned, but they would only call it a structure fire. There are no reports of any injuries. There’s no word on what started the fire.

Probation for Chippewa Falls Woman

It’s probation for a Chippewa Falls woman accused of stealing from her family. A judge yesterday said Jennifer Eyerly doesn’t have to spend any more time behind bars. She pleaded guilty to two felonies and five misdemeanor charges. Prosecutors say she spent eight thousand-dollars on a credit card that she took-out in her mother’s name. They also say Eyerly stole her family members’ social security numbers by promising them jobs in Chippewa Falls, but those jobs never existed.

Eau Claire’s minor league baseball team is hoping to be back on the field by the end of the month with fans in the stands. The Eau Claire Express is hoping for 50-percent capacity at Carson Park when they return May 31st. That’d be about 19-hundred fans. Express GM Jacob Servais says they want to provide as normal an experience as the can. Tickets for the Express are on sale now.

WI Prison Vaccination Rate Nears 50%

One of Wisconsin’s most successful vaccination programs may be in the state’s prisons. The state’s Department of Corrections yesterday reported that nearly half of the state’s 19-thousand-plus inmates have gotten at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. About 95-hundred inmates are either fully or partially vaccinated. DOC says there have been over 10-thousand coronavirus positives in the state’s prisons, but only 11 of those cases are considered ‘active.’

Gov. Evers Closes in on 200 Pardons

Wisconsin’s governor is closing-in on 200 pardons. Governor Evers yesterday issued 18 more pardons, mostly for drug crimes or thefts, bringing his total since he took office to 192. The governor says all of the people he pardoned yesterday have turned their lives around, and many of their crimes are now decades old.

The Republicans who control the state legislature will start to craft that budget today. Push for Election Changes Continue

Republicans in Madison are not letting-up in their push to clarify the rules before the state’s next election. A Senate panel yesterday heard testimony about several election reform proposals that Republicans say will close the loopholes exploited during the November election. The plans deal with everything from absentee ballots, to vote counting, to how cities and counties can work without outside groups. The proposals are all likely doomed, though.
