One Year, One Big Difference

What a difference a year makes.  According to unemployment numbers released today by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development the state’s unemployment rate is just under four-percent for April at three-point-nine-percent.  A year ago the state unemployment rate stood at just over 14-percent.  The national unemployment rate for April was six-point-one-percent.

WI Daily Coronavirus Cases Under 450

 There are 448 new COVID-19 cases being confirmed in Wisconsin today.  The Department of Health Services says that number boosts the total number of positive cases to just under 607-thousand-600.  There were also two deaths reported today, which raises the death toll to nearly seven-thousand. Buck(y) Naked at Capitol

People who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can drop their masks at the state Capitol.  The governor’s office says today those who are vaccinated can skip face coverings at the Capitol and most other state buildings beginning June 1st.  Unvaccinated people should continue to wear masks in state buildings.

Body Cameras Get the “OFF” Button at Capitol

The budget committee in the Wisconsin legislature is voting down body cameras for State Capitol Police.  Governor Tony Evers had proposed spending up to 100-thousand-dollars to equip over three dozen Capitol officers with the cameras.  The proposal didn’t get past the budget committee today, which voted 12-to-four along party lines to squash the measure.

Arrests Made in Dunn Co. Hatchet Attack

On May 19th a Dunn County Investigator and a Menomonie Police Investigator, both assigned to the West Central Drug Task Force, were completing a drive by of a residence in the Township of Dunn. This residence is the same as where a homicide had occurred in November of 2020 and was known to law enforcement as a high traffic drug residence. WI Ties for Low Unemployment Rates

The latest jobless numbers are out this morning.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says first-time and ongoing unemployment claims are down in Wisconsin in the latest week.  The state is tied with the fifth lowest unemployment rate in the country.

How to Toss and Trash the Masks

The masks can come off of fully vaccinated people in Eau Claire and disposable ones can be thrown in the trash.  Eau Claire County recycling says disposable masks are not recyclable or biodegradable.  They say people can also cut the ear loops before throwing them out to protect wildlife from potential entangling.

Rittenhouse Court Appearance Planned

 It will be the first time Kyle Rittenhouse has stepped foot inside a Kenosha County courtroom. Rittenhouse is due to appear, in-person, tomorrow for a status hearing in his homicide case. He’s only appeared virtually because of the coronavirus. Rittenhouse is due to go on trial in November for killing two people and wounding a third during Kenosha’s night of violence last summer. His lawyers continue to say that Rittenhouse fired in self defense.

Local Events Planned for Memorial Day

The Eau Claire Patriotic Council announced that the 2021 Memorial Day Parade and program will be held as scheduled.    There will be some slight modifications to what has been done in the past but the intent of honoring those that sacrificed all for our country will be at the center of this patriotic holiday and events in Eau Claire. Activities start on Saturday, May 29.  On Monday, May 31 the parade begins promptly at 9:30 a.m.
