WI Officials Urge Vaccinations; “Delta” Variant a Concern

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services continues to urge Wisconsin residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19.  The CDC today classified the Delta variant as “one of concern” as it continues to quickly infect people, mostly the unvaccinated.  The Delta variant has been found to be more contagious and more resistant to vaccines.  State officials reported 107 new COVID-19 cases today and two additional deaths.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM WI DHS.

WI Unemployment Holds Steady

Statistics released by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development shows the state’s unemployment rate unchanged over the last month.  According to today’s data the unemployment rate for Wisconsin remains at April’s rate of three-point-nine-percent.  About 34-hundred private-sector jobs were added statewide last month.

Paper Mill Opens Anew

The first new paper mill to be built in Wisconsin in three decades is now open.  Green Bay Packaging cut the ribbon today on its new 500-million-dollar facility.  It replaces the original mill, which was built in 1947.  Officials say the new paper mill has many environmental improvements including switching from coal to natural gas for operation.

Summerfest Looks to Fill Spots Off Stage

It’s going to be the next test of the shortage of workers. Summerfest managers say they need two-thousand temporary workers this year. There is a job fair planned for next weekend. Summerfest is offering free tickets and food vouchers in addition to a paycheck and benefits for all workers. Many businesses across Wisconsin are having trouble finding workers this summer. Many of them say generous unemployment benefits are keeping entry level workers at home.

WI Lawmakers Tackle Sports

Republicans in the state Assembly have passed a pair of bills that restrict how trans women can take part in high school and college sports. The bill’s author, Republican Barb Dietrich, says the bill would create a separate but equal co-ed branch of youth sports that trans women would be allowed to participate in. WI Lawmakers Approve Police Reforms

Wisconsin’s governor says he will sign a new slate of police reforms, including a ban on chokeholds, but he also wants more. The state Assembly yesterday approved a series of reforms that came from a state task force. Back to the Political Drawing Board

There’s talk of lawsuits over the plan to delay the drawing of Wisconsin’s new political map. The state Assembly yesterday approved a proposal to push-back the start of redistricting until February of next year.
