Avery’s Request Denied

The Wisconsin  Court of Appeals is denying Steve Avery’s request for an evidentiary hearing or a new trial in connection with the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach.  Avery, who was featured on the Netflix docuseries Making a Murderer,  is serving a life sentence for her killing.  The judges ruled today that Avery wasn’t entitled to any of his motions because there was no error by the lower court when it used its discretion to deny motions to vacate and for reconsideration.

Deputy Returns to Duty

On Wednesday, July 28, 2021, an independent shooting review panel, made up of law enforcement firearm instructors and law enforcement administrators, met to review the July 14, 2021 incident in Mikana. The recalled product includes: Jerky, various flavors, 1-lb. packages, produced before March 2, 2021 This is a Class I recall resulting from evidence collected during a routine inspection by state inspectors. Stimulus Money Set for Student Debt

The technical colleges in Madison and Milwaukee are using some of their coronavirus stimulus money to pay-off past due tuition costs. Milwaukee Area Technical College says it will spend nearly six-million-dollars to wipe out student debt. Madison Area Technical College last week said it would spend four-million-dollars of its stimulus money on the same thing. $627K Pay Day For Former MKE Chief

Former Milwaukee police chief Alfonso Morales is walking away from the city with 627-thousand-dollars. Milwaukee’s Common Council approved Morales’ wrongful termination settlement yesterday. The agreement spares Milwaukee from any further lawsuits from the former chief and allows the city to hire a new permanent police chief. Morales sued after he was pushed-out last summer. Morales is one of four finalists for the police chief’s job in Fitchburg.

DHS Pushes Vaccines, Masks

The number of new coronavirus cases in Wisconsin is at its highest level since April. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported 983 new cases, the highest number in four months. Gavel Drops: No Jail Time in Animal Abuse Case

The woman who nearly starved her dog to death back in 2019 will not go to jail. A judge in Menomonie yesterday sentenced Anne Iehl to two years probation. Iehl was convicted back in May of not feeding the dog, now named Gabriel. Animal rescuers say the dog weighed just 23 pounds when they found him. New Apartments on the Way

More apartments are coming to Eau Claire. The city council last night okayed the plan to renovate the Campus View Inn & Suites and turn it into apartments. The old motel is across from HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital on Eau Claire’s south side. Developers are promising 87 apartments by next fall.
