Madison Masks Up

Folks in Madison are going to have to continue to wear their masks for another month. The city’s health department yesterday extended their mask order until October 8th. The extension also comes with a change. Public health managers added an exemption for performers, which means at the very least that the University of Wisconsin’s marching band will be able to play without having to keep their masks on at all times.

Sports Affected By Bus Driver Shortage

Add this to the list of problems caused by Wisconsin’s bus driver shortage. School leaders in the Howard-Suamico School District this week said a lack of drivers is forcing them to move or cancel some sports. Assistant superintendent Mike Juech says it’s hard enough to get kids to school during the day, he said finding drivers for after school sports and activities is even tougher. The bus company for Suamico schools, Lamar, says they have 73 buses but only 43 drivers.

It’s Official

Former Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch is running for the Republican nomination for governor.  Kleefisch who served under Scott Walker launched her campaign today.  She says Governor Tony Evers’ entire term has been marked by failure and weakness.  Kleefisch says as governor she would ban sanctuary cities and deploy the Wisconsin National Guard to help secure the southern border.

Flags Lowered to Honor WI Brothers

Flags will fly at half-staff on Saturday in honor of three brothers from New London killed at Pearl Harbor.  Governor Tony Evers ordered the flags to fly from sunrise to sundown on September 11th when the brother’s remains will be buried with full military honors at Most Precious Blood Cemetery in New London.  Navy Firemen Malcolm Barber, Leroy Barber and Randolph Barber were aboard the USS Oklahoma on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked.  Their remains had been buried, unidentified,

Case of Measles Being Contained

There is a case of measles detected among the new Afghan refugees at Fort McCoy.  Officials say that person is in isolation and anyone who had close contact has been placed in quarantine.  Anyone else at risk has been given a measles vaccine and all the refugees are receiving a COVID vaccine.  No one else has been diagnosed with measles.

Scam Targets Students

University of Wisconsin police are warning students about a new scam.  The department says there’s been a massive uptick in the number of scams targeting students.  One in particular offers 500-dollars a week to be a personal assistant.  Police say if you’re offered money without actually doing work or a job without ever applying or if you’re notified you won a large sum of money it’s most likely a scam.

UW President to Visit UWEC

UW System Interim President Tommy Thompson will visit the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Monday, Sept. 13, for a public event on the campus mall. As part of an effort to achieve a 70% vaccination rate on all campuses, Thompson will join Chancellor James Schmidt at the event to celebrate UW-Eau Claire’s progress toward the goal. WI Tourism Gets a Boost

Tourism gets a boost in the Dairyland. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism recently announced $51,183 awarded in Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) grants. JEM grants provide partnership funding to help nonprofit Wisconsin organizations promote tourism, including organizations such as Convention and Visitor Bureaus and Chambers of Commerce. With five rounds of grants throughout the year, the JEM grants are part of an ongoing program to ignite projects and grow economic impact.

Milwaukee Man Added to FBI’s Most Wanted

A Milwaukee man wanted for a 2006 double murder is now on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. The agency added Octaviano Juarez-Corro to the list yesterday. Police say he shot and killed his estranged wife and members of her family during an execution-style shooting at a picnic at South Shore Park in May of 2006. Two people died and three were wounded. Pumpkin patches are back in Eau Claire. Ferguson’s Orchard’s owner says pumpkins are back earlier than usual due to heavy rain.
