It’s back to school for kids across the Chippewa Valley today. Most schools in Wisconsin are starting classes today. In Eau Claire, it means a return to a full, five-day-a-week schedule and a mask mandate. Kids in Chippewa Falls schools have a choice as to whether they want to wear a mask. Police in both communities are asking people to slow down in school zones and be aware of school buses.

After that win last week, this week the Husky’s will sit and stay. Eau Claire North won’t be taking the field this Friday against Superior. The school’s athletic director yesterday canceled Friday’s game because of a coronavirus outbreak. Howling Begins Over WI Wolf Hunt

A coalition of animal rights groups is asking a judge to stop Wisconsin’s next wolf hunt. The groups filed a lawsuit yesterday claiming the state’s Department of Natural Resources set the quota for this year’s hunt too high and voted against the wishes of scientists and conservationists. The lawsuit also says DNR’s decision should be canceled because one of the board members is a hold-over from the Walker Administration. DNR’s board last month set the quote for this year’s wolf hunt

Xcel to Charge More Green to Go Green

Xcel customers are going to pay more to cover the cost of going green. The utility yesterday said bills will go up next year by more than five dollars per-month for the average customer. Xcel’s Chris Ouellette says the price hike will go to pay for the utility’s renewable energy projects. Xcel wants to be 100-percent carbon free by 2050.

WI Vaccine Rates Tick Up

More people got the coronavirus vaccine last week. The state’s Department of Health Services says vaccinations jumped to over 68-thousand doses last week. That’s a nearly 12-thousand-dose jump from the week before and breaks the average of just over 50-thousand doses-per-week that Wisconsin has seen since July. Lt. Gov. Kleefisch Files Paperwork to Run

Rebecca Kleefisch is taking the next step toward running for governor. Kleefisch has been touring the state for months and has been talked about as a candidate, but last week, she filed the paperwork to officially run for governor next year. Kleefisch has not formally launched her campaign, though that could be coming soon. There are some other possible Republican candidates, including Bill McCoshen and Kevin Nicholson. They will all fight to see who runs against Governor Evers next fall.

A liberal activist who snuck into a Wisconsin Republican event over the weekend is trying to make headlines with a comment from U.S. Senator Ron Johnson that Donald Trump lost the election last year. Overdose Awareness Day

 Governor Tony Evers is observing Overdose Awareness Day in Wisconsin.  The day commemorates those who struggle and who have died from drug addiction especially opioids which account for most overdose deaths.  The Department of Health Services says over 68-hundred Wisconsinites died from drug overdoses between 2014 and 2020.  The CDC says 15-hundred-and-30 residents lost their lives to overdoses last year which was up over 300 from 2019.

Veterans Load Plane for Old Glory Honor Flight

Veterans from the Korean and Vietnam Wars are having a chance to visit the nation’s capital and the war memorials honoring those who served and died.  The Old Glory Honor Flight is resuming after the COVID pandemic grounded the program.  About 100 veterans were on a flight leaving Appleton International Airport for Washington, DC today.  They will return this evening and the public is invited to welcome them home at 7:30 at Appleton International Airport.  The parking is free and
