EC Man Sentenced to Prison

WIAA Throws the Flag on Shortages

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association says they are in “crisis mode” as the total number of licensed officials has dropped dramatically over the past year.  To date, the WIAA is reporting nearly 14-hundred less officials on staff than a year ago.  That’s a 39-percent decline from ten years ago.  As the high school football season kicks off across the state, there are more than 540 fewer officials able to work games.

Bucky Gives Back Bucks

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is giving millions of dollars in federal pandemic relief money back to students.  The university announced this week that it has more than 28-million dollars in Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding from the federal government.  The funds were part of the American Rescue Plan authorized by Congress back in March.  School officials say more than seven- million dollars in automatic payments have already gone out to roughly 65-hundred eligible students.

WI Sees COVID-19 Cases Climb

 The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is reporting 47 new cases of COVID-19 in Eau Claire County as of Thursday’s update.  This week, health officials said that 34 counties in the state, including Eau Claire County, are currently transmitting COVID-19 cases at a “very high” rate.  Statewide, the DHS reported another 14-hundred-81 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday.  At last check, more than 61-percent of adults in the state are fully vaccinated. Contact Tracing Information

The Eau Claire City-County Health Department is advising anyone who was at a local bar recently of possible COVID-19 exposure.  Per local health officials, the potential exposure would have occurred at The Joynt on Water Street on August 17th between 6 and 8 p.m.  Anyone who was there during that time and is experiencing any sort of symptoms is advised to get tested.  There are six COVID-19 testing sites in Eau Claire that are currently taking appointments.

Library Adjusts for Labor Day

The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library will be closed one additional day for the Labor Day holiday for system updates.  The library announced this week that in addition to Labor Day, Monday, September 6th, they will be closed Tuesday, September 7th.  Per a press release, the library will pause services, including the catalog and other services for card holders.  The library will reopen Wednesday the 8th with updated hours of operations.

Pres. Biden Speaks On Afghanistan

President Biden says “it’s been a tough day” and confirmed the attack that killed 12 U.S. service members was carried out by ISIS-K. He called the deceased service members “heroes” and said the situation in Afghanistan is “evolving.” He added that “his heart aches” for the families of the dead troops. Steven Avery Appealing to State High Court For Evidence Hearing

The defense team for convicted killer Steven Avery continues to appeal for an evidentiary hearing and a new trial.  Avery is serving a life sentence for first degree murder in the 2005 killing of photographer Teresa Halbach.  The defense has raised multiple issues and have been overruled multiple times including a denial by the appeals court last month.  Avery wants the Wisconsin Supreme Court to review several issues including ineffective assistance of counsel.

WI Air Quality Affected by MN Wildfires

Smoke drifting down from wildfires in Minnesota and Canada is creating unhealthy levels of air quality in areas of North Central and Northeast Wisconsin.  Brown County, Kewanee, Outagamie, Waupaca, Shawano, Door, Oconto, Menomonee, Marinette and Forest counties are all in the red category for poor air quality today.  People with respiratory and cardiac issues as well as young kids and elderly people should stay indoors as much possible.

Voice Of Bucks Goes Off Mic

The radio voice of the Milwaukee Bucks is retiring.  Ted Davis announced today he is stepping down from that role after 24 years.  The 65-year old said he’s young enough to enjoy what’s next in his life and appreciates the fact that he was able to live his dream.  Davis’ last call was the Bucks win over the Phoenix Suns in Game 6 which gave Milwaukee the NBA Championship this year.
