Stanley Man Found Dead Inside Truck In Chippewa River

A Stanley man is being identified as the person found dead inside a truck that was located Sunday in the Chippewa River.  Authorities responded to the scene in Rusk County with reports that a truck had been spotted upside down in the water.  A man found inside the vehicle has been identified as 71-year-old Thomas Wadzinski.  Authorities say it appears the truck entered the water without any attempt on the part of the driver to apply the brakes or make

Court Appearance Planned for Jackson Co. Arsonist

A sentencing hearing is scheduled today for a man convicted of setting of wildfires in Jackson County.  Those fires burned on county and private lands back in 2023.  Defendant Daniel Johnson pleaded guilty earlier this month to three counts of intentionally setting fire to another’s land.

Vernon Co. Motorcycle Chase, Crash Under Investigation

Hillsboro Police report a man involved in a motorcycle crash earlier this month has died.  Police were pursuing the rider — identified as 46-year-old Vincent Larsen — after they say they spotted him entering the community at a high rate of speed.  After losing sight of the motorcycle, authorities later found Larsen crashed near Emplify St. Joseph’s Hospital.  The incident remains under investigation.

Bond Hearing Set for Rusk Co. Scammer

A bond hearing is scheduled today for an Indian man accused of financially victimizing an elderly Rusk County resident.  Authorities say that Miteshkumar Chaudhari was involved in a scam in which the victim was financially exploited via fraudulent threats delivered by phone, email and text.  Miteshkumar, who authorities say is in the country illegally, was arrested last week on a list of theft charges.  The Rusk County Sheriff’s Office says they have been in contact with ICE regarding Chaudhari.

Gov. Makes EC Stop for Childcare Focus

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers visited Eau Claire on Monday as part of a continued push for state investments in childcare centers.  Evers spent time with children and staffers at the Kiddie Patch Early Learning Center on London Road.  The governor says it is important for childcare centers to be supported. UW Madison Makes Budget Cuts

The University of Wisconsin Madison is making budget cuts.  The university announced that schools and colleges will be required to cut their budgets by five percent for fiscal year 2026.   The cuts come as universities around the country face uncertainty with federal funding.  That includes possible changes to the federal indirect reimbursement rate and the risk of grant terminations or freezes.

Trial Starts Today For Man Accused Of Killing Newlywed Couple In Elkhorn Bar

The trial for a man accused of killing a newlywed couple in an Elkhorn bar starts today. Prosecutors say Thomas Routt killed the couple, Emerson and Gina Weingart, inside Sports Page Barr early last year. Gina was working as a bartender during the shooting. Routt previously spent 25 years in prison for setting fire to his ex-mother-in-law’s residence and was released in 2020. Sparta Crews Assist in Horse Rescue

The Sparta Area Fire District says it helped free a horse that got trapped in a manure pit on Sunday. Crews used tow straps to lift the horse out of the pit in Monroe County. It got stuck after fencing was blown down and the horse veered into the pit. The horse seems to be okay, but and its owners plan to have it checked by a veterinarian.

Traffic Re-Routes Planned for Blue Ox

To accommodate traffic control for the Blue Ox Music Festival, Crescent Avenue between North Town Hall Road and Eagle Lane will be closed beginning at 6:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 26th. The road will reopen at 10:00 P.M. Heavy traffic for the music festival is expected on Crescent Avenue. Commuters who usually use Crescent Avenue may prefer to use an alternate route. The Blue Ox Music Festival runs from Thursday, June 26th through Saturday, June 28th.
