Fire Danger Stretches the Dairyland

All of Wisconsin has some level of fire danger.  According to the Department of Natural Resources fire risk map, northern and central Wisconsin are in very high fire danger.  That means wildfires can start quickly, spread rapidly, and are more difficult to control.  Burn restrictions are in place for most of northern Wisconsin.  Western, east-central, and most of southern Wisconsin are in moderate fire danger, with the southeastern corner of the state at low fire risk.

WI Sues DOT Over Blocked Funding

Wisconsin is suing the Department of Transportation over more than 60 million dollars in blocked electric vehicle funding.  Governor Tony Evers says the money was already approved by Congress and should not have been blocked.  More than a dozen other states have also joined the lawsuit, which says losing the funds could halt infrastructure plans and job growth.

Multi-Vehicle Crash Under Investigation

On Wednesday evening about 8:30 the Chippewa County Sheriff’s office received a report of a three-vehicle accident with injury and road blockage on STH 27 at 115th Avenue in the township of Arthur.  A vehicle was northbound on STH 27 attempting to turn west bound onto 115th Avenue.  The turning vehicle collided with a southbound vehicle in the intersection and became disabled in the intersection.  The southbound vehicle continued southbound, however, the operator had lost control, and the vehicle crossed

Crews Respond to Assisted Living Center Fire

Fire crews are investigating how a fire started at an assisted living facility in Holmen. The fire took place yesterday on the 3000 block of Circle Drive. When fire crews arrived at the scene, they saw light smoke coming from one of the rooms, but no flames were spotted. The facility was evacuated as crews could put the fire/smoke out. No one was injured and crews believe the fire started from an air conditioning unit.

Bodies Recovered From River, Investigation Underway

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating how two people ended up dead in a river. The sheriff’s office received a call from someone who found two bodies in a river just northeast of Tomah. Police did confirm that the two people left a local bar the night before and that no one had seen them since. They believe that foul play was not involved. La Crosse Chamber CEO Steps Down

It was announced the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce from La Crosse, Beth Franklin, is stepping down from her position. She plans on leaving May 15th. Franklin has been with the organization for almost seven years. The board of directors said, “We appreciate her contributions to making Greater La Crosse a more vibrant place to work and live.” The board will begin a search for a new CEO right away.

WI Congressman and Family Threatened

A letter threatening Western Wisconsin Congressman Derrick Van Orden and his family is found to be credible.  In a Facebook post, the congressman says he and his wife were threatened, along with their children and grandchildren. As a result, Van Orden will miss votes tomorrow and reschedule a town hall meeting planned for today.  It’s unclear who sent the letter to the congressman’s D.C. office or what the threat was, but it has been reported to authorities. WI State Patrol Reminds Drivers of Deer Crash Risks

The Wisconsin State Patrol is warning drivers about a higher risk of deer crashes as the weather gets warmer.  State Patrol says the number of crashes involving deer increase in May and June as deer look for places to give birth and keep their young offspring.  There were more than 17 thousand deer-related crashes reported last year, resulting in nine deaths and more than 700 injuries.

Applications Open for Barron Co. Sheriff

Applications are open for a new Barron County Sheriff.  Current County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald announced his retirement to the public earlier this week after notifying Governor Tony Evers on Friday.  Fitzgerald says he’s leaving for a public relations role at Mosaic Technologies.  Once selected, the new sheriff will serve until January 2027.  Applications will be accepted through May 23.
