Southwest Cancellations Hits Midwest

Southwest Airlines accounts for about half of the people flying out of Milwaukee, which means the airline’s wave of cancellations is being felt in Milwaukee. Southwest canceled more flights from Mitchell Airport yesterday. It comes after Southwest canceled several flights on Sunday. No one is saying if Southwest will cancel more flights today. The airline is blaming its wave of cancellations on weather problems, but many say pilots are calling-in sick to protest the company’s coronavirus vaccine mandate.

Add this to the list of shortages in Wisconsin. Kwik Trip says it can’t get enough plastic bottles, so it’s pausing the sale of some flavored milk. Low fat chocolate and strawberry milk in 8 ounce and 16-ounce bottles are no longer on the shelves. Kwik Trip spokesman David Niemi says the bottle maker cannot get the material to make the bottles. There’s no shortage of milk, Kwik Trip owns its own dairy plant and ships 105 thousand gallons of milk

Man Facing Hefty Fines After Illegal Bear Hunt

A Wisconsin man is pleading guilty to illegally transporting a black bear carcass from Canada to North Dakota.  Officials report Joseph Stolarczyk reached a plea deal after being caught exceeding the Manitoba bag limit by killing two bears in the same year.  According to court documents, Stolarczyk pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of unlawful transportation of wildlife in foreign commerce, and could face a hefty 100-thousand dollar fine as well as a year behind bars.

Manitowoc Drug Bust Leads to Federal Prison

Eight men that police describe as mid-to-upper-level drug traffickers are headed to federal prison for several years.  Christopher Ramirez was handed the longest sentence at ten years for methamphetamine distribution.  Javier Vargas will serve an eight-year sentence for meth distribution and Quinton Hollis was convicted of heroin distribution and sentenced to six years.  The dealers were arrested in a drug bust conducted by the Manitowoc Metro drug unit.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul says on Indigenous People’s Day we honor Native Americans, their ancestors and their major contributions to the United States and its culture.  Kaul says it’s important to acknowledge the historical trauma that indigenous communities have endured and commend their resilience.  Kaul says the state of Wisconsin is now and must continue to be committed to working collaboratively with tribal nations as sovereign partners. UW-Chancellor Heads to Illinois

The University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor is leaving the university.  Rebecca Blank is leaving at the end of the year to become the first female president of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  Blank has been chancellor in Madison for over eight years.  She said today it’s been a privilege and an honor to serve the people of Wisconsin and the university.

Deer Crossing…The Line?

Appleton police are offering some advice when it comes wildlife in the city.  Cops say a person and their dog suffered minor injuries when they were attacked by an aggressive deer near Linwood Park last week.  While Appleton Police and the DNR work on a solution, officials strongly suggest people keep their dogs on a leash, watch wildlife from a distance, don’t feed or touch wildlife in the parks and if you see an aggressive animal call police.

UW-Madison Expands Online Degree Options

UW-Madison is expanding its online-only offerings. The university on Friday announced the creation of a new Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree. It is Madison’s sixth online-only degree. Chancellor Rebecca Blank says the hope is to get students who started a degree, but then went on with their lives to finish taking classes and finally earn their degree.
