Fallen Firefighters Named

The names are released of the two firefighters who died in a wreck Thursday.  Mineral Point firefighters 43-year old Captain Brian Busch and 69-year old firefighter James Ludlum were killed when their firetruck was hit by an 18-wheeler on U.S. 151.  Captain Busch and firefighter Ludlum were responding to a call at the time of the wreck.  A procession was held yesterday to carry the two firefighters from the funeral home to UW Autopsy & Pathology in Madison.

UW Madison Extends Mask Mandate

 The mask mandate for indoor use on the UW-Madison campus is extended.  The school announced the change to the policy yesterday.  Masks must be worn indoors on campus through March 1st.

Community Heats Up for Cold Weather

The Middleton Tourism clothing drive brings in hundreds of items this season.  The drive ended January 4th with an accumulation of over 16-hundred items of warm clothing for those in need.  The clothing was distributed among four non profits in the area to be handed out to help warm people up.

Movie Attendance Down Across U.S.

Movie theatre attendance is dropping significantly below historical norms.  According to a Gallup poll, Americans watched an average of just over one-point-four films in a movie theater over the last 12 months.  A majority of those surveyed didn’t visit a movie theater at all.  Sixty-one-percent said they haven’t been to a theater in over a year while only nine-percent attended five or more films.  In comparison, between 2001 and 2007, U.S. adults watched an average of almost five movies in

Feds Call FBI Informant In Whitmer Case “Double Agent”

Federal prosecutors are claiming one of the FBI informants used to report on the alleged plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was a “double agent.”  Stephen Robeson of Wisconsin allegedly tried to obstruct the 2020 arrests of six men accused in the kidnap plot.  He also reportedly offered to use charity money to buy weapons and the use of a drone in the plot.  Prosecutors are trying to prevent Robeson’s statements from being read to jurors in the upcoming trial.  The

Thompson to Step Down in March

Interim University of Wisconsin System President Tommy Thompson says he’ll step down on March 18th.  Thompson made that announcement this morning, saying the search for a new president is almost done.  He’s served as interim president for the last 18 months.

Stevens Point School District Shifts to Online Next Week

A central Wisconsin school district is moving to online learning.  The Stevens Point Area School District says classes will be held online from January 10th through the 14th because of an increase in coronavirus cases.  Classes are also canceled today.  The school district says the student absentee rate is 25 percent.

No Charges Filed in Home Break In Case

No charges are being filed in connection with a deadly home-break in Appleton.  Investigators say Jonathan Tolley was shot and killed by a homeowner after breaking into their house last June.  Investigators say Tolley forced his way into a locked bedroom where the homeowner was hiding before being shot.  The shooting has been declared self-defense.

HSHS Announces Record COVID-19 Patients

An unfortunate milestone has been reached within Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) across Wisconsin and Illinois; A record 303 patients are currently hospitalized and being treated for COVID-19 in HSHS hospitals as compared with the previous high of 293 patients in November 2020, before a vaccine was available.
