U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) Wisconsin State Director Andrew C. Iverson today announced that USDA RD is investing a $24 million loan to the City of Baraboo to construct a new central fire station and a smaller satellite station. The funding is through the USDA RD Community Facilities (CF) Direct Loan and Grant Program. The current fire facility was constructed in 1868 with an addition made in 1957. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is continuing its investigation into a black bear attack that occurred the afternoon of Saturday, July 12 in Barron County below is information from the DNR. The victim, 69-year-old Karen Frye, was attacked while outside at her rural residence near the town of Comstock. Charges are being filed against two suspects following a high-speed chase in Jackson County.  Deputies on Sunday attempted to pull over a vehicle and arrest 47-year-old Jeremy Guy who was wanted on a felony arrest warrant.  Police say Guy eventually stopped the vehicle but then fled the scene on foot.  He was arrested a short time later as was his passenger.

Holmen Police are investigating a weekend hit-and-run.  Authorities say the crash happened sometime between 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Monday.  They say the suspect vehicle is red.  Anyone with additional information on the accident or with possible camera footage of the incident is encouraged to contact police.

Monday was the last day for assistance applications to be reviewed at a Western Wisconsin homeless shelter for veterans.  Klein Hall in Chippewa Falls and another shelter in Green Bay are both losing their funding with the state’s new budget.  Both facilities are set to close by September 30th. A new lawsuit wants to bring back fusion voting for Wisconsin voters.  Through fusion voting, a candidate can be nominated by multiple parties on the ballot.  Advocates say it’ll energize independent voters and third parties.  The suit was filed by a bipartisan coalition of voters.  Wisconsin would join New York and Connecticut in practicing it.

Federal funding freezes could force the closures of up to 40 Boys and Girls Clubs across Wisconsin.  The Trump administration froze more than six billion dollars in grant funding, claiming schools were operating under a radical left-wing agenda.  17 million of those dollars were for Wisconsin.  If the facilities shut down, 477 staff members could lose their jobs and 85-hundred kids could lose free child care and after-school programming.

The Wisconsin State Fair is bringing back a classic staple to its festivities. Following months of renovation, the Dairy Building will revert to its old name of “The Original Cream Puff.” Managers say the new bakery should increase the efficiency of cream puff-making. Wisconsin State Patrol troopers will start going ride alongs with semitruck drivers as part of a law enforcement campaign starting today.  The Department of Transportation says the troopers will use the higher vantage point to spot dangerous driving behaviors more easily.  Troopers will focus on different cities each day of the campaign starting with Hudson, near the Twin Cities, today.  Law enforcement in Waukesha, Madison, Green Bay, and Wausau will also participate throughout the week.
