Company Announces New Facility in WI

A new Serta Simmons manufacturing facility is being built in Janesville.  The company says the facility will bring in over 300 jobs when it opens with the possibility for more jobs in the future.  Current facilities in Beloit  and Janesville will be consolidated once the new one opens.  It’s set to open in 2023.

Drop Box Decision Could Drop Today

The first step toward a final decision on ballot drop boxes and absentee ballots in Wisconsin comes today. The Wisconsin Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in the case this morning. The high court will decide if Wisconsin law allows for drop boxes, and decide if voters are allowed to return someone else’s ballot. A judge in Waukesha County back in January said state law doesn’t allow for either, but an appeals court later disagreed. A decision from the court is expected this summer.

New Pres. Wants School Support

The new president at the University of Wisconsin wants to see lawmakers do more to support the school.  New President Michael J. Falbo yesterday said a new report shows state support for the UW System has fallen from 30 percent to 18 percent over the past 20 years.  Falbo says students have made-up the difference, and says that leads to more student debt and fewer students enrolling at Wisconsin’s campuses.  Falbo is not saying just how much more he’d like to see the

Wisconsin’s special election investigator says judges are ‘dragging out’ the review into the 2020 vote. Gavel Drops: Rules First, Then Regulation

If Wisconsin wants to enforce rules for so-called forever chemicals, then the state needs to write those rules first. A judge in Waukesha yesterday essentially froze Wisconsin’s efforts to force companies to clean-up PFAS chemicals. The judge says there are no official standards for the chemicals in either state law or in the rules at the Department of Natural Resources, so there can’t be any enforcement. Reward Offered In Case of Injured Eagle

 An 18-thousand-dollar reward is now being offered to catch the man accused of shooting a bald eagle in western Wisconsin.  The eagle was found in Cooks Valley last week and is currently in the care of the Raptor Education Group in Antigo.  The Raptor Group says the eagle has lead poisoning and they’re still trying to get 20 bird shot out of its body.  The eagle is expected to survive.

Madison makes WalletHub’s list of best places to celebrate Easter.  WalletHub says Madison is the 70th-best city to celebrate Easter based on over a dozen metrics, including the city’s Easter traditions and how many people observe the holiday.  Milwaukee also makes the list at 52nd.  WalletHub says the top city for Easter is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Seven Teens Arrested After Car Theft

Add this to southeast Wisconsin’s stolen car problem. Police in Glendale arrested seven teens on Sunday, all between 12 and 17-years-old, because they say the group stole a Kia from the parking lot at the Bayshore Mall. Police eventually chased the car down, then had to run after the suspects. Glendale Police are recommending charges of fleeing, recklessly endangering safety, operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent.

EC City Council Considers Fire Station Upgrades

Eau Claire’s city council will consider an upgrade at Fire Station Number 6 tonight. Firefighters want to add to the station to keep up with demand on the city’s south side. An upgrade at the station would allow for both more firefighters and more equipment. The city originally wanted to spend a half-million dollars on the upgrade, but the city now says that price tag has jumped to two million dollars.

Oh, Deer!

There are more deer in Eau Claire. The latest survey from the city’s parks department shows a 12 percent increase in deer in the city since 2018. The survey says the areas near Jeffers Road and Oakwood Hills both saw large increases in the number of deer. Parks Director Steve Plaza says it looks like more people may be feeding the deer, which only increases the number of deer in Eau Claire. He says the city doesn’t want people feeding
