A Sun Prairie girl is named this year’s Dane County Fair “Fairest of the Fair”.  Hayden Paske won the competition this week and will officially be crowned at the Dane County Breakfast on the Farm in June.  She’ll serve as the Dane County Fair’s official ambassador and will make appearances at the fair, which runs from July 21st to the 24th.

We could have to wait until the fall to get some answers about the on-going investigation into Eau Claire County’s Department of Human Services. Sheriff Ron Cramer yesterday asked that search warrants in the case be sealed for another 180 days. Cramer has been investigating a million-dollar ‘error’ in DHS’ budget for nearly two years. Chippewa Falls’ mayor is eyeing at least a one-million-dollar tax question for the fall. Mayor Greg Hoffman wants to ask voters for more money to pay for more police officers. He says the city’s growth, growing demand, and the impact of inflation has the city looking for money. The mayor says he’d like to see at least one million-dollars more, but Chippewa Falls’ city council president says the referendum should be two-point-five million-dollars to cover other possible expenses.

Tribal leaders in Wisconsin say it’s about time the word squaw is taken off the map across the state. Brandon Yellowbird-Stevens, vice chairman of the Oneida Nation, said he is happy to see the Interior Department move to change the name for 28 different streams, lakes, or natural features in Wisconsin that all have squaw in their names. There is a sketch of the suspects in Madison’s north side sexual assault from last week, and it’s apparently bringing-in some tips. Madison Police yesterday said they’ve received about a dozen tips in the case. There have, so far, not been any arrests. Police are looking for the man who is accused of attacking a woman outside of her apartment on Brandie Road last Tuesday.

 A Milwaukee man who lied to police about the gun used in the accidental shooting of his five-year-old son will serve probation, not jail time in the case.  A judge yesterday sentenced Joseph Salinas to three years of probation for the shooting in August of 2018.  The boy survived. Salinas pleaded guilty to carrying a pistol without a concealed carry license. He told police he was asleep when his then-five-year-old climbed a cabinet and found his 357 Magnum. When police

On Friday, April 15, 2022 the Barron County Sheriff’s Department along with the WI Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) arrested Derek Salewski, 23 of Barron. Salewski was part of a several month investigation in a Possession of Child Porn and Distribution case. He was charged today in Barron County Circuit Court and is currently being held at the Barron County Jail on a $1000 cash bond.

Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson won’t run for governor again this year.  The 80-year-old Republican made that announcement today, saying he made the decision after considering his family.  He served as governor from 1987 to 2001.  There are currently three Republicans set to try to unseat Governor Tony Evers  this year. That list includes former Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, Wisconsin State Representative Timothy Ramthun, and former Marine Kevin Nicholson.

The Milwaukee woman charged in connection with the 2009 death of an infant in southeast Wisconsin is pleading guilty.  Karin Luttinen was charged last month with concealing the death of a child and pleaded guilty to that charge this morning.  Luttinen’s charged in the Baby Theresa case, where a child was found dead in a trash bag in the Village of Theresa 13 years ago this month.  She’ll be sentenced in August.

Madison police are looking for a man and woman charged in connection with the death of an infant.  Police say Arkeem Ashley and Estefania Martinez are facing charges in their child’s death from back in 2020.  Police say the child died by homicide by blunt injuries to the head.  Anyone with information is asked to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers.
