Tax filing season opens today, 17 days earlier than last year.  Kristin O’Keeffe Merrick is a financial advisor with a simple tip for anyone filing this year. Tax returns are due by Monday, April 18th this year.  Those requesting an extension will have until October 17th.

We now know the names of the three people killed in Saturday’s crash in Jackson County. The sheriff’s office in Black River Falls yesterday identified them as 34-year-old Robert Hopinka and 36-year-old Tyler Decorah both of Black River Falls, and 35-year-old Jorden Vidana of Onalaska. Investigators say they died when their car hit a semi on Highway 54 early Saturday morning. The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains on-going.

Police are hoping for answers today into why six people were killed inside a home.  Officers first found four men and a woman when they arrived yesterday but confirmed a sixth victim overnight.  At this point, it’s unclear how they died.  Investigators are still gathering evidence and say there’s no weapon yet.  The acting mayor called it a horrific crime and called on the city of Milwaukee to work with police to reduce violence.

We are waiting to see if Wisconsin’s coronavirus hospitalization numbers continue to fall. The state’s Hospital Association on Friday said just over two thousand people are in the hospital with the virus. That’s a drop of more than 200 people from the week before. The Hospital Association reported 425 people in ICUs across the state. The weekend update will come later this afternoon.

Eau Claire Police put some prospective officers through their paces over the weekend. The city’s police department held its physical test for officers wanting to join the force. There are 65 candidates for seven open spots in the department. Saturday’s test included a 300 meter sprint, a one and a half mile run, vertical jump, push-ups, sit-ups, and an agility run. The candidates already took the written test. They should get their results in a few weeks.

Don’t be surprised if you see some more big trucks on the road this winter. Wis-DOT on Friday said the state’s frozen road law is now in effect statewide. The frozen road law allows big trucks to carry heavier loads of logs, sand, or salt across the state. There is a map which shows which roads are now open to the heavier trucks, you can find it at Wis-DOT’s website.

The library’s Bradley Lindstrom says the podcast is a way for local artists and creatives to explain what they do, and expand people’s horizons. The head of Wisconsin’s 2020 election investigation no longer wants to send Madison and Green Bay’s mayors to jail. Former Supreme Court Justice Mike Gableman’s lawyers last week said they still want the two to cooperate with his investigation into the 2020 election, specifically how Green Bay and Madison worked with the Mark Zuckerberg-funded Center for Tech and Civic Life, but he no longer wants them locked up. It’s going to be the summer before the University of Wisconsin’s new president takes over. Regents on Friday named Milwaukee attorney Jay Rothman as the UW System’s next president. He is the school’s eighth president, and will replace Tommy Thompson who announced his retirement earlier this month. Rothman is the CEO of the law firm Foley & Lardner. He will make 660-thousand-dollars a year as UW President.

It didn’t take long to find the money for new bullet proof vests for six Madison police dogs. The city’s police department says they were able to raise over 15 thousand-dollars for the dog vests in just two days. Madison Police launched the fundraiser on Friday, by yesterday afternoon they said they had met their goal.
