School leaders in Tomah are walking away from a school referendum that looks doomed to fail. The city’s school district last week said it is pausing plans to ask voters for up to 96 million-dollars for new schools because it doesn’t look like the plan would pass. No word on the next steps for new buildings and upgrades.

Governor Evers on Friday vetoed the plan which would have allowed teens under 16 to work as late as 11 p.m. The governor says he doesn’t want to create two separate systems of work requirements. Currently, 14 and 15-year-olds can only work until 7 p.m. during the school year and 9:30 during the summer.

The new hub will be almost three-and-a-half million square feet, and should employ 15 hundred people. The plan is to start construction sometime this year. The Cottage Grove center would be Wisconsin’s fourth Amazon distribution center.

The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook on Saturday offering a ‘Valentine’s Day Weekend Special.’ The sheriff says people can call-in and tell deputies where to find exes that have outstanding warrants. Part of the ‘special’ are ‘limited-edition platinum bracelets,’ and a “special Valentine’s dinner.”

Officers responded to a call of shots fired at the apartments Saturday morning. Police Chief Peter Nimmer says the 26-year old shooter lived at the complex. Chief Nimmer says two people were shot dead besides the shooter who also apparently took his own life. A fourth person was shot in the leg and is expected to survive.

Police say yesterday afternoon the driver hit a weak spot on the ice and the truck broke through. The driver tossed his cell phone out onto the ice and managed to crawl out of the submerged truck to call 9-1-1. Police say he has to remove his pickup truck within the next 30-days.
