“To everyone who sent in cards, and to all who continue to support Wisconsin’s veterans—thank you. Your kindness makes a difference.”  Thanks to the generosity of people from across Wisconsin and the nation, the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) was able to distribute thousands of Valentines Day cards to Wisconsin veterans last week. WDVA Secretary James Bond personally delivered cards on Valentine’s Day to the veterans, loved ones, and Gold Star families residing at our home in Union Grove.

A snowmobiler in Fort Atkinson was being treated for hypothermia after his sled went through the ice on Lake Koshkonong Saturday morning.  It happened around 11:30 a.m. and the friend who was with the man was able to reach shore and call for help.  Fort Atkinson Fire Department crews reached him about a mile from short around 12:10 p.m.  He was hospitalized in Janesville for hypothermia.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers wants prison reforms as part of his 2025-2027 biennial budget.  He wants to transform the Waupun Correctional Institution into a modern facility to offer inmates vocational training and wants to close the Green Bay Correctional Institution.  Evers says there are around 23-thousand people in prison right now in Wisconsin, and they expect that to grow to 24-thousand over the next two years.  He adds the state “is decades behind in how we think about corrections.”

Rising prices for eggs are hitting food pantries as well as family budgets.  Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin food resources manager Ian Steele says the price of eggs has risen for them by 66-percent in the last six months.  WayForward Resources senior director of programming Meghan Sohns says the loss of American Rescue Plan Act money to subsidize the egg purchases has hurt them, as they now pay from ten to 25-dollars per case.  They add demand for eggs

Rebecca Elyce Good, 35 years of age, from Alma Center, WI has been arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol Eau Claire Post for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 1st offense, with two children in the vehicle under the age of 16. A Trooper with the Wisconsin State Patrol stopped a vehicle for speeding on I-94 eastbound at mile post 126. The Trooper observed that the driver, Rebecca Good, showed signs of impairment. A new case of bird flu is confirmed in Milwaukee County. The Department of Natural Resources says the virus was found in a wild merganser collected last week. The bird flu virus has been found in six Wisconsin counties since mid-December, including Dane, Racine, and Racine Counties. Most fatalities are in swans and Canada geese.

The Wisconsin Police Chiefs Association has a new president. Altoona Police Chief Kelly Bakken was sworn in yesterday. She’s worked for the police department since 2019.
