Call it a benefit of the snow storm. UW-Eau Claire is canceling in-person finals because of the winter weather. Students were supposed to wrap-up exams today and tomorrow, but the school yesterday said that won’t happen. The university said it is allowing everyone to work from home today, and is closing campus tomorrow because of the heavy snow that’s expected in Eau Claire. Wisconsin’s first ban on TikTok is in Washington County. County Executive Josh Schoemann on Monday ordered a ban on TikTok on any and all county-owned devices. He says what started-out as something fun has become a potential tool for Chinese spying. Schoemann says there are no reports of any hacks or leaks of county information, but he also says he doesn’t want to take the risk.  The Juneau County Sheriff’s Office is renewing its search for a woman that went missing over 70 years ago when she was a little girl.  The sheriff’s office says four-year-old Ricky Bryant was last seen in the front yard of her home in Mauston in December of 1949 as a fire was being put out.  This week the sheriff’s office put out a picture of what Bryant might look like at 60 years old.  Anyone with information is asked to

Two men are facing charges in connection with a nationwide ‘swatting’ spree that targeted a home in Oxnard. On Monday, federal prosecutors charged the 21-year-old from Wisconsin and the 20-year-old from North Carolina. For a week in November of 2020, they allegedly hacked into Ring home security cameras and placed 911 calls. Once they got an armed response, they taunted and threatened police who showed up at the homes. They’re accused of making a dozen swatting calls nationwide, including in Oxnard and

The former owner of the Waunakee Veterinary Clinic is denying allegations of animal abuse.  Not guilty pleas were entered on behalf of Doctor Wesley Arnett in an initial court hearing yesterday.  The veterinarian is facing six misdemeanor charges related to claims by pet owners that he struck and kicked animals in his care.  Arnett is released on bond and is barred from treating or handling any live animals besides the ones he owns.

A Waunakee woman is spending time behind bars in connection with a deadly Monroe County crash.  A judge has sentenced 42-year-old Carrie Herbst to eight years in prison.  Prosecutors say her blood alcohol level was over twice the legal limit when she entered I-94 the wrong way in October of last year, hitting another vehicle head-on, killing a 29-year-old man.  In addition to the prison sentence, Herbst will spend another decade under extended supervision, according to court documents.

Utility officials across Wisconsin say more power outages are likely coming soon because of the strain the last storm put on powerlines.  Crews from eight different states came to Wisconsin to repair outages across northwest Wisconsin.  Xcel Energy officials say almost 60-thousand customers were without power at the peak of the last storm.  Officials with Jump River Electric Cooperative say almost half of their members lost power.  They remind residents to have emergency plans prepared in case of extended outages.   

The city of Eau Claire and other municipalities are opening sites where residents can bring their debris from the latest storms.  Last week’s storms knocked over trees and took down branches.  In Eau Claire, the site is located at Green Waste Facility and it opened yesterday.  It’s located on Jeffers Road and will remain open until January 31st.  The site is also where the city’s Merry Mulch tree recycling program is located for residents to recycle their Christmas trees.  Trees

Voters in the Village of Lake Hallie will be asked next year to consider exceeding the state tax levy to afford another full-time officer.  The Lake Hallie Village Board last night also approved adding another referendum question next April to support the village’s fire and rescue expenses and road improvement projects.  Board members say the village is growing and calls for services have also increased. 

The Packers are keeping their postseason hopes alive by beating the Rams 24-12 on Monday Night Football in Green Bay.  The loss dropped the Rams out of playoff contention,  Aaron Rodgers threw for 229 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the victory.  AJ Dillon rushed for a pair of scores, while Aaron Jones ran for 90 yards and also caught a touchdown pass.  Green Bay has won two straight to improve to six-and-eight.
